So I've never managed a 52 successfully, sometimes I struggle to manage monthly POTY entries but I'm determined to make the time and get photographing.
With the nature of my job I can't always plan to get the camera out, I'm also getting married this year so it might not be a good year to try a 52

I'll be following along with the themes from the TP 52 thread but without the promise of one photo per week, but I'll be doing my damnedest to stay as close to that as I can.

I know I'm already behind so I'll hopefully manage to catch up over the weekend and next week.

And so it begins...

Welcome Mark... I hope you manage to get a good few entries in this year, don't forget you can always play a Joker/Old image if that is what you need to do - good luck with your challenge (y)

Thanks DK, I'll just start at the beginning and see how we go :)

Awesome depth of field, really makes the diamonds (presuming?) stand out. Really nice start to your 52s.

Good luck finishing,
Oscar

Hi MArk, nice ring and dof. Good luck completing your 52

Nice picture like the black boarder really complements the ring :)

Hello and welcome to the challenge, a nice start with that image. I like the composition, I think for my tastes I would like the focus to be on the top of the ring rather than on the shoulder of the ring.

Thanks Oscar, Diamonds indeed, I'd say she's a lucky girl but I know what she has to put up with

Hi MArk, nice ring and dof. Good luck completing your 52
Thanks PP :)

Nice choice and interpretation :)
Thanks Jon - Don't tell anyone but the ring is plastic! (Kidding)

Thanks Tyrex, it was initially for me to title the image but I like how it works

Thanks for the feedback Mandy, I would tend to agree. With the extenders the focal area is tiny, both tripods were in use for the OCF's so this was handheld. I'd like to give it another go sometime as it isn't quite what I had imagined, but it's very close.

Hi there and good luck for the year ahead ....I like your choice for Metal, a very nice shot of a lovely ring.
Thanks Susie, she said yes so I assume she likes the ring too :)

Thanks for the comments and feedback all, good luck with your projects

Week 2 - Captive.
Meet Pacha, she is my cat. She wouldn't know it, but she is captive. She isn't allowed out, for a few reasons. She has managed to escape once or twice early on, but for the last year or so, we can happily leave the front door open and she has no interest in going out. It's far too warm and comfy inside :)

Metal - Nice ring :) I can't help thinking that the focus is a bit off, but they are bloody to get right - The ring I shot last year for the 52 wasn't as good as this one, so
Captive - That looks says "take that thing away from me!"
I'm trying to decide if the eye is in focus or the fur, it's a close run thing, but I think the focus *may* be a bit to the front.
Lighting works well, was it natural or a soft flash?

Thanks Tim, yeh I had a lot of trouble shooting the ring. I have a new found respect for togs that regularly and successfully shoot jewellery.

There's an ongoing joke amongst my friends that Pacha (the cat) always looks grumpy for photos, which is frustrating as she's a really pretty cat. Clearly she just hates the camera. I seem to get good shots of her when she's pre-occupied.
I think you're probably right about the focus point, it looks to be on the fur just above her eye, I blame her for moving ;)

Thanks for the feedback, it was shot with a big window nearby and an off camera flash, reflected off the ceiling at 1/8 power

Hi Mark. Must have missed Metal - nice shot of a beautiful ring. As for Captive - Wow that is an excellent image with that subtle lighting on the face and front paws.

Hi mark, I also missed the shot for Metal - Nicely lit, just a shame you missed the focus (I know how frustrating that can be with extension tubes).

Captive - That's a nice shot, great expression.

Like your images, maybe a touch out of focus, like the expression you have captured.

Captive - that's one cute kitty, I love the composition, absolutely fantastic image :):clap:

Like the images, maybe a toc X100T

Thanks all for your comments, I really appreciate them and I'm glad you like the shot. @SteveSc those extension rings are trouble without a good tripod, I might also have to invest in a rail :)

@purplepleaser
maybe a toc X100T
can you clarify what you mean by this? :help:

Hi, very good shot of the cat (y), he looks mean,

I would crop the top to just below the light area top left and lose the writing

That is one p***ed off looking cat Mark :D

Nicely taken

No crit from me. Excellent subject (will need to use our cat at some point too!), great expression and the lighting / PP is very moody. Perfect.

Thank Allan, She's a big softy but she knows when she'd having a picture taken, and does her best to ruin it!

She may be 'captive' but the look in her eyes in this shot definitely brings out the wildcat in her!
:) thanks

Super shot Mark, you've captured the look perfectly...very nicely done
Thanks Susie

Thanks mate, I just wish she would smile :D

How strange, I was going to post the exact same works :)

I do like it. Nice moody lighting.

Cheers.
Thanks Andy, it was pretty much trial and error, I just pretend to know what I'm doing:thinking:

'Perfect', Wow, thanks Ian! It took a while to get it right, I tried bribing her with treats but she was too clever for that, she just took the treat and ran off to hide, good luck, I hope you have patience, or a more obedient cat than I

A big (y) from me for the picture of Professor McGonagle. I know how difficult is it to get a cat to sit still. I think you' ve missed the focus on the eyes by just a hair otherwise it's a fab portrait :clap::clap:

Thanks for giving the f # 'n all, lovely lens, narrow DoF but is it too narrow? I thought the eyes were in focus but if not they're as good as.

Lovely shot he/she has that thousand Yard stare well captured (y)

Metal - Good shot of the ring I know they are difficult to take so well done.
Captive - what a Great picture of a beautiful if rather cross cat.

Hi - congrats on the wedding! :)
Metal - Like others have mentioned, maybe a little off on the focus (diamond rather than shoulder?) - but it's a great macro shot. I think a B&W conversion would've worked well here, if only to lessen some of the distraction in the reflection in the metal. Good job though!
Captive - Gorgeous cat, GREAT expression captured puurrrrfectly too! (Sorry!) Lovely and sharp which is a feat in itself knowing how fast these little buggers move! Nice shot, one of may favourites from this theme for sure!

What a menacing stare :) like it Mark
Indeed Jon, I'm sure she hates me :)

No worries - I think it's useful for others to understand the image and also give feedback if all exif is available. It is very narrow, possibly shot myself in the foot a little, especially as the eyes are slightly out!

Lovely shot he/she has that thousand Yard stare well captured (y)
Thanks Michael

Thanks very much :)

Thanks Matt, yeh I again wonder if I should narrow the aperture to get more in focus. I think I was more concentrating on all the flashes
Nice pun! And by nice I mean shocking ;) Thanks very much for your comments and to all. It's really useful (y)

Hi Mark, Great photographs. The central diamond in the ring really sparkles and a very beautiful cat looking rather cross at being photographed :) Liz

Hi Mark

A great start to your 52 challenge

Metal: Love the depth of field and lighting on this

Captive: Lovely shot looks like she's thinking can I eat that no then please kindly remove it from in front of me

As some of you may have seen, I've been struggling with water drops this week :banghead::banghead:
I've chosen a winner, it could have been 3 or 4 others but I like how the splash of this one fills the upper third of the shot.
No timers or auto releases, just a couple of flash guns, a syringe and numerous attempts at getting the timing right.

I took this one a while back but wasn't sure whether or not to post it as it was a 'practice', but I like it so it's going up :) Fond memories!

Your perseverance with the water droplets has paid off Mark - well done. Nice image - do they call that a crown? I do like the mini droplets. As for the Nintendo - brings back many fond memories so definitely a good one for Old.
