Hey all,

I have a holiday to thailand booked towards the end of the year and hope to get a lot of photography done too, we'll be taking part in lots of activities so I'm not sure taking a 600d with a couple of lenses is a good idea (not weather sealed). I'm looking at a rugged camera to purchase and have a budget of £300.

So far I've shortlisted:
  1. Olympus TG-1 - F2 lens (not raw format but could be good in low light)
  2. Nikon AW100

and looked around at some others, Does anyone have any suggestions for rugged/tough camera's with good picture quality or any experiences/opinions on the above?

Take your 600d.
It's a lot tougher than you give it credit for.
There's no point having it if you're too scared to use it.
Plenty of people in Thailand own 600d's and don't have any problem with them not being weather sealed.

I have used my D7000 on the back of an elephant for 4 hours in a northern Thailand monsoon with no long term damage. I would be tempted to get a 'cheap' compact for the real crazy stuff where you don't fancy using a DSLR, then take your canon for everything else. Also grab some optech rainsleeves!

Canon Ixus looks like a good compact. When I went to Thailand (some years ago now) I took my compact (film) camera on the boat trips and kept the 20D for the 'dry' outings.

We went in monsoon season, so it was very humid. Take some of those little silica packs to put in your camera bag just in case.

Can I just say that Silica packs are useless in that situation, there is just too much air moving through the bag, they would get wet extremely quick if it was that humid. If you are staying in budget fan rooms you have no problem, if you stay in more expensive air-con rooms then place your gear in ziplock bags when you pass from air-con to outside. However I wouldn't bother because it sounds like you are going in Nov/Dec which is the least humid time and no more humid that a hot sweaty UK day.
