Just read an article saying Ronnie is up for parole next week and as it is coming up to his 80th birthday I personally think yes.... the man poses no threat to society and should be allowed to spend some time out but no doubt there will be differing views, so thoughts please

The state he's in there's no way on Earth he'll be robbing anymore trains any time soon. But he's been refused release a few times before already. He got 30 years for train robbery, that's more than sex offenders seem to get these days. Let him out. Let him go have a pint of Bitter in a pub in Margate.

He's had his time out already, 30+? years of it in Brazil

Mmmmm I'm in the other camp on this one, a lot seem to forget how brutal this robbery was.

He has had his freedom, during which time he laughed and sneered at British justice, I say let him serve his time and if that means he dies in prison so be it!!.

Take him to Afghanistan and leave him there.

We are far too soft on crime in this country, far too many do gooders, shrinks, and reformists get in the way of justice for the victims.

Life should mean life, 30 years should mean 30 years, and another thing while I am in rant mode, sentences should run consecutively not concurrently, unlike the States where they do hand down sentences amounting to over 100 years in some cases

Rant over!!............for now.

By modern standards, their sentence was remarkably harsh. If Biggs is refused parole, then so should every prisoner convicted of crimes of violence.
In fact, lets go the full hog and withdraw parole from anyone released early from a sentence based on crimes of violence.
Start with the ones released under the "Good Friday agreement" as some of them were convicted of some of the most heinous crimes of the 20th century.

Leave him in prison, if he had not escaped he would have been out as a free man years ago like the rest who did their time. He should spend more time in prison than the rest of the gang, time given for the crime then more time added on for absconding.

I don't care how ill they are, do the crime do the time.

Why stop at crimes of violence, there should be no parole full stop. If they don't behave in prison then ADD time on.

He's an old man, he's sick and he's no danger to any of us. Time for a bit of compassion maybe? I think so anyway.

As an aside this took place not far from me and I pass the site on a semi regular
basis
In 1963 this was a very very violent crime, probably not so much by todays "standards"
( which in its self is a very sad fact indeed)
£2 million was a lot of money then ( around £40 million in 2006 according to wiki)
Should he be set free?
With others committing very serious crime and only getting a few years then going by todays
"Standards" I would say yes let him out

But I also believe like Mal that a "life sentence" should be life
10 years should be ten years etc for everyone not just a "select few"

So, as long as one can evade "capture", which in Biggs' case only came about because he wanted to avail himself of the services of the UK's health service, then one should be allowed to go unpunished?

Surely that's the same train of thought (if you pardon the pun) that sees motorists fined for going 5mph over the speed limit, but burglars and muggers let off with a warning...

Actually the man in question, Jack Mills, died of Leukemia, 7 years later....

Was it him? I seem to recall whoever did die, it was attributed to the effect the robbery had on him. If it didn't kill him, it either shortened his life or dramatically affected it in a negative way.

Wish i could remember more but old age is a b****r when you're getting old like me.

edit; regardless, hang him anyway. It's got to be better entertainment than big brother or some other reality tv show... :D

Mills was unable to return to work after the assault, but it didn't kill him.

It amazes me all the publicity Biggs is given, when all is said and done he was a minor criminal, who was only involved because he happened to know someone who could drive a train

And have him lauded as a "prince" or a "saint" as per happened with the last reality tv "star" to die?

Keep him in, just in case he perpetuates another Rock'n'Roll swindle.

Im in two minds over this, ont he one hand he should serve his time, i agree life should be life or what ever the sentance.

However, how much is it costing me as a tax payer to keep a mostly (now) harmles old guy in jail?

No...keep him in - it's not about him no longer being a threat to society - there must be an element of 'punishment' to sentencing...
If he's let out now he'll be living it up as a celebrity - what message does that send?
He's a Bloody Crim and that's that.
