Hi guys,

Will be doing some recording of some events for family and friends this summer, so will need to be investing in a microphone. Have narrowed it down to these two, but should I spend the extra cash?

I don't have a either, but I understand that the Pro has a higher signal-to-noise ratio (less noise/ hiss), is smaller and has a better shockmount suspension system. However, I do have the NTG2, which is very good and I believe the Pro uses the same or a similar capsule. If that's the case, I would opt for the Pro.

I have the Rode Stereo Video mic that I thought was excellent, then I got a Zoom H4N. Wow, no contest. It is quite a bit more expensive but sooooo much better.

Shop around for microphones, as you can often get good deals from dealers yoo wouldn't normally think of. I've picked up bargains from DJ shops on the internet in the past. If you can afford it I'd opt for the Pro. However if it's just BBQ's and birthday party's the the standard mono mike may be good enough , and a bit cheaper.

Also be aware that vocals are virtually always recorded in mono for interviews etc, stereo tends to be used for recording ambience, orchestras that sort of thing. If you are shooting shorts, docs that sort of thing a small shotgun/(rode video mic if budget won't allow), a lav and an audio recorder is all you need for a basic set up, if you really need stereo use the recorders built in mics they will easily match the rode stereo mic
