Anyone else noticed that, there is a pub at the end of our road, small rural town and it was quiet road in my neck of woods anyway but now past 10pm its silent, must admit i like it even more.
maybe we can retain the 10pm pub closing time.

I really miss going to the pub, after doing so regularly for almost fifty years, but I don't suppose it will ever be something I will do again. :(

Pubs have been in decline for many years due to the greed of PUBCOS, but I think this Covid lark will finally finish off a lot of pubs and possibly a lot of breweries.

It is more complex than that - its the smoking ban, supermarkets and also being stricter on ID (back around 1990 it was fairly easy to get served with my 'student id' among other things all having an impact too.

True, the smoking ban hit them hard. It made them much nicer places to visit though. (y)

I also agree with the underage drinking - the UK and the US have ridiculous restrictions that almost encourage binge drinking. In Europe (mostly Spain and France), children are introduced to and even allowed to imbibe at a much younger age (diluted of course). This in turn gives them a much more mature attitude towards alcohol as they get older.

Indeed. We gave up smoking 2 years before the ban and the effects were almost instantaneous as far as being aware of what it was like to be around smokers. We found pubs very unpleasant places to be until the ban came into force. Now they're much more family friendly.

Now we ned to move onto the next stage of the ban, other peoples' kids!

ALL kids (are other people's!)

TBH, we only go to pubs that do decent food - we barely drink (in the UK) (having spent far too many years in and around the licensed trade!) so the boozing side doesn't interest us at all.

Fully agree, nothing encourages me to pass a pub by more than seeing a large plastic dinosaur or climbing frame in the beer garden! I don't mind well-behaved kids and responsible families that keep their kids under proper control, but I hate it when they allow their kids to run around the dining area or repeatedly scream and shout to the extent they become a nuisance to the other diners, while their parents do sod all about it.

I liked pubs before they were full of people eating morning, noon and night.
And before the landlord/landlady thought that their pub was a restaurant, and that their mediocre cook was a chef!

Does anyone else wish that pubs would go back to serving good, simple, traditional 'pub food' and stop trying to pretend to be restaurants (and quite often failing miserably at it!)? Why not just offer us good, simple, home-cooked grub, and plenty of it, instead of trying to emulate Master Chef? Half a small chicken, home cooked chips and a simple bit of salad to go with it... nicely cooked and pleasantly served? Or perhaps a sirloin steak and a sprinkling of fried onions, served between French bread, with a handful of chips and salad garnish? With similar, simple but tasty, and filling, options for vegetarians.

I think that's the sort of food a good traditional pub should be serving, instead of trying to flog you some miniscule portion of 'pan fried' (I mean, how else do you bloody fry something?!) sea bass fillet, served with chorizo (who the hell thought that sausage and fish was a good combination?) and squid ink linguine, with a red wine jus! :cautious:

You obviously have crap pubs near you. Lots of good ones my way, some doing the pub grub you mention but others doing other cuisines and fine dining too.

There used to be a very nice local 'gastro pub' (they changed their entire 'specials' menu almost daily, so you never got bored eating there) and they regularly used to have well-known chefs call in to dine with them, but it changed hands. There was another local pub that did lovely, home-cooked, traditional pub style food, but it also changed hands. Perhaps these two were a hard act to follow, but these days I don't know where to go locally for a good pub meal, with the places I've tried either seeming inconsistent or falling between two stools, to the extent that I've pretty much given up eating out at pubs (other than for a 'snack' type lunch), which has made lockdown a bit more tolerable I suppose!

That's not traditional pub food. It was either a ploughmans or burger and chips. Before that it was a bag of crisps, pork scratching or nuts.

Grub used to be served lunchtme, things like cottage pie, sausages, chicken pie with mash, chips or peas.
Quite often kept in big glass dishes and when it was gone that was it for the day.
Usually cooked by the landlady and was often her bunce, very nice it was too.
Nearly forgot the free roast spuds Sunday lunchtime, they were very popular and soon went

Chicken (or scampi) in the basket was around at the same time as the ploughman's and burger and chips... 'basket meals' were were very popular and a regular favourite of mine in the local pub in the early-70s when I was a kid. Coincidentally, I had a ploughman's lunch in a pub a few weeks ago.... he was furious! ;) :coat:

Yes - definately ! They should be made to stop having them :D

Try a cold bottle straight from the fridge.

I like bottled beer, mainly the European variety especially German.
Lots of varieties, Altbier, Helles, Dunkel, Witbier and Schwarzbier to name a few.
Belgian is ok although a bit strong for my liking although I really like Bolleke.
Beers of Europe have a good range, Majestic sometimes have Bitburger which is also good.

some good points i also can't stand kids in pubs.
not really into pub food either its usually awful
smoking well as an ex smoker all people who smoke should stand out in the rain and snow ( and the 10 days of sun we have).

however to be fair my biggest issue with pubs nowadays is the awful selection of stuff they sell.
years ago we were promised the dismantling of 100s of tied pubs selling the same generic crap and that hasn't happened.
we had the cider revolution my fave which sold well but was to much "hard work" for landlords so they have mainly given up and the prices are crackers.

my local has a nice guest cider "old rosie " which is now £4 a pint with the wifes large wine its a tenner, nah..... jog on.

Me too. Well, not so much the pub - just the beer. You can't get cask in a can. :(

A couple in Sheffield do take away beers in 2L jugs fresh pulled....

I've contemplated getting a pump installed in the house

Back on topic of quieter roads, I have noticed the roads being quieter at anytime over the last month or so.

looked a few times at those beer machines, im not into real beer, but some great belgium stuff in 5l kegs

And so much less rowdy in the evenings, especially weekends, here at the Folkestone Harbour area. Apparently the COVID situation has caused a nearby night club called The Party Bar and a pub (Gillespie's) to both finally close down for good. Thank heavens as both places were dives and were responsible for many restless nights,. "Why did I move here knowing there were such places?" you might say. I've lived in the same house for 37 years and both those places appeared about 20 years ago; ergo, I was here before them.

Despite the widespread hardship being caused by COVID, this is my own bit of silver lining in the cloud.

I fancy one of these form the Greek house in a few years, i saw the kegs recently in a hypermarket near Chania.

Keg beer tastes no different to canned beer according to my taste buds. Has to be fresh cask, not that Eurofizz vended crap. :puke:
