Shutter jammed giving Err 30 today while on the Iceburg beach in Iceland. Can actually see part of the shutter curtain protruding into the frame. Not especially good timing I must say. Fortunately I'd already got some shots and could use my EOS-M for the rest of the day.

The good news is better half agrees I now need a new DSLR. So will be looking into getting a 7DII or a 5DIII when I get back to Blighty. Can't imagine they'll be cheaper here as everything seems typically higher price than UK.

I bought a Breitling Aerospace watch in Keflavik Airport for two thirds of the U.K. price. Might be worth checking out.
 
Eugh, I feel your pain - that situation is one of my nightmares when on holiday. How was the beach, and have you got any shots you can post?

The beach was just amazing and as for shots, I hope there are some worth posting but won't know until I get home next week.
 
Might be worth seeing how much to repair your 50D and keep as a spare :whistle:

Thanks. It hasn't gone in the bin (yet), so will check it ou more thoroughly when I get home. I suspect it's beyond economical repair. I do still have a 20D as a spare DSLR, but that is now ten-years and 120k+ exposures old. So even though it still functions well, I'm expecting the shutter to fail on that at anytime.

The 50D is at least 6-years and I estimate 200k exposures old. This shutter failure was not exactly unexpected, just inevitably inconvenient.
 
This is where the eos m with adaptor really comes into it's own as a lightweight backup I like having mine just in case!

Exactly. The EOS M has been a life saver (not literally of course). Will have to wait until I'm home to see if I've captured anything special, but on first inspection it looks to have done a decent job.

Man, that's unlucky. One of my friends recently clocked up 500,000 exposures with his 50D. Yours was still a youngster!
 
Bad luck there, especially whilst you were away on holiday. As an ex-50D owner I feel your pain, but the same would go for any camera. On the plus side you do get to go shopping for a new one, with the one and with the OH's consent!
 
Damn, at least you have the M for backup.

Love my 50d, great workhorse and still going strong :)

Thanks, but I'm picking up a 7DII tomorrow, which I'm hoping will dovetail very nicely with my 100-400mm IS L II.. :)

Probably be at least a couple of hundred and with low act 50Ds selling for 225 its just not likely to be a worthwhile option - I'd say stick it on ebay as spares or repair , someone will buy it for 20 or 30 quid for parts
 
Thanks Pete, pretty much my thoughts. Though curiosity may get the better of me and will find myself taking it to bits just to see what these digital SLR thingys are made of.. :)

That's great, 608k actuations is pretty amazing. My guess is that with a design life of 100k, your friend's 50d is well out towards the edge of the bell-curve, whereas I suspect mine is somewhere near the middle. I truly would have liked mine to carry on, bit it hasn't. Stuff happens!

I feel for you as I had my 50d for quite a while and loved it to pieces. Such a good camera...

Yes of course, otherwise it wouldn't be remarkable.

Incidentally the vast majority of those photos have been taken with his 70-200mm f/2.8 L, and the iris mechanism on that *did* need to be replaced last year, probably somewhere around 500,000 to 550,000 exposures. But he got it repaired and serviced by Canon, and it should be good for a few more now.
 
Well, 7DII is in hand now. Have charged the battery and been fiddling about in the menu system this evening. Quite a learning curve ahead of me I think to get the best out of it. The 50D was pretty straight forward, this has so many more options. Will try a few shots tomorrow to check out the basics and go from there...

All's well that ends well I guess.
 
Very tempted to get one back as the price on fleabay seems to be dropped under £200. Really good price for such a good camera.

That's true and I did consider that. However I do still have my 20D and EOS M for backup. I was also considering upgrading to a 7DII anyway, so the 50D failing made that decision a bit easier. Where and when it failed was the biggest pain, but no-one died, just very annoying.
