Gutted, looks like the weather played a very serious part yesterday. My 30d took a weather battering yesterday and it looks as if it has died a death.

No power or red light when you pop in a new battery.
Have tried a variety of tests to get some life into it but nothing at all.

Anybody got any suggestions?

OOOHH NOOOO!

If its damp (how could that have happened?) then maybe leaving it somehwere warm for a few days (over a radiator) with its orifices open will dry it out...?
 
Remove battery from camera, put in a warm dry place (airing cupboard)
Then when you're 110% sure its dried out, try it.
If not, open it up and soak all the pcbs in pure alcohol.

Yep - That's where it currently is sitting. You reckon I should open it up ?

Get an Olympus E-3 :D :thumbs:

'Tested' mine the other night, by putting it under the shower head and fired off a few shots with flash poped up.

No problems what-so-ever. :woot:

second the alcohol idea.

i use Isopropyl Alcohol and i would do it sooner rather than later as once the rot sets in it can do irrepairable damage to the circuit boards.

Oh **** Neil, that's dreadful news. The weather was awful yesterday though... very sorry to hear of this, fingers crossed that it dries out and all works well again soon.
 
Thats awful mate. Sorry to hear that. Ive been getting a bit more brave with my camera lately, taking it out in 'spitting' weather.

How wet did it get?

If you feel confident, then yeh fella. I've repaired 2 lenses now from nasty damage. When it was suggested not to. Its how you feel, just be carefull. Plenty of little pots to keep screws in, and in the tidiest room you can.
 
If you're going to strip it down, take lots of pics showing what goes where as you go along. makes putting it back together a dodle as you just start with the last picture and work backwards.

Also number your screw-pots to correspond with your pictures so you know which screws go with which part of the re-assembly.

Bad news Neil but it could take a few days to dry it out completely so hope it works for you.
 
I've had my 30D out in the rain all day, first time like but it's done it no harm :)
 
Stating the bleeding obvious here but I'm going to say it any way ........If your going to open it up be sure you use the correct size mini driver and it would be worth paying for a decent set, not the usual 99P rubbish made in China, you don't want it to look like it has been opened up by damaging the screws.
 
Bad news, but definitely leave it to dry out thoroughly for a few days before you declare it dead.
 
I would test the batteries too as you may have shortened them too if you placed them in the camera, dunno if they would but worth checking out ;) Got my fingers crossed for you mate.
 
That really sucks, I've had my 20d completely drenched on several occasions. The latest of which was rally ireland when i started noticing condensation on the inside of the screen. I would deffinately leave it in a warm damp free enviroment to help completely dry it out.

Pretty wet - Thought I'd try and get a couple of the wet-look crowd that came on the shoot.I did dry in off quite well in the various pubs we tried. I just had feeling yesterday that something would happen, becuase it was wet and cold.

Yep. I have tried the 2 in the grip. But also a spare I always keep at home. Tried various power settings, so joy.

You mention trying them in the grip, have you tried them sans grip ?
 
I was pretty certain you would have but thought I would just check. Not really camera gear but r/c cars when I used to race them outside in all conditions stuff used to quite regularily get totally soaked and stop working completely and we would let them dry for a few days and quite often they started working again.

Occasionally If they had gotten wet with quite dirty water you would take the circuit board out and clean the majority of dirt off by running it under a tap then clean more carefully with Isopropyl Alcohol and leave for about 5 days somewhere very hot and dry to totally dry out. (Silica gel would help with that also)
 
If all else fails, there is one consolation, some plonka on ebay will probably pay a good price for it:cuckoo:

Thanks for this, Chappers. I'll definitely be investing in something like this.

I was tempted to take some photos on the way back from a gig in Liverpool on Friday night, but it was chucking it down and I was too scared to take my camera out of its bag!

After reading this thread, I'm glad that I'm such a chicken! :)

Sorry to hear that you're 30D hasn't recovered, Chewy. Hopefully the insurance claim will go smoothly!
 
I'm really worried now, Ive been letting mine get a few splashes of rain on it, and trying to keep wiping them off.
 
The wait to get it back will be an absolute killer I'm afraid!

I had to send my previous camera off to be repaired. Suddenly everywhere I looked there were photo opportunities. Really frustrating!

Hope yours is sorted out nice and quick!

Marcel - Mine was wet, rather than a few splashes of rain, we got soaked. It was stored in the bag ... but I also took shots like this...

My D70 dropped into the Caribbean off a boat last September, whilst I was trying to put it in the Ikelite casing. It hit the deck 19m below and took almost ten minutes to retrieve. I left it on the deck of the boat in the 34degree sun and it was working again by lunchtime! CF card was knackered though so I lost a LOT of photos.

Try drying it out, you may get lucky. Just don't attempt to switch it on whilst it's even remotely damp, and take the battery out.

Failing that, home insurance...
