I am of to Brazil on Monday for 10 days, 5 in Curitiba and 5 in Rio, I don't plan on using my stuff in Curitiba however I do plan to go out and use my camera in Rio however, I have read some real scare stories...anybody been, any advice ?

I spent a couple of weeks there some years back (long enough ago that things might be different now) but my experience tells me that you should be very careful when you venture out ! I had several chances to return but always turned them down on the basis that if I was going to fly half way around the world then I might as well go somewhere where I would be safe on the streets outside of work hours. Sao Paulo was very different (safe with sensible care) so Curitiba might not be an issue.

I'd certainly advise you to go out without items of value until you've judged for yourself the current levels and types of threat.

Edit......pack some Imodium !

Take care and be very vigilant. I put my camera in a tatty plastic carrier bag, and only took it out when I wanted to take a shot, then popped it away again.

I've been on Ipanema beach when a pal next to me nearly had his X100T snatched out of his hand as he was taking a picture. I've spoken to football photographers who had their taxi stopped and all their gear taken out of the boot while they were working out why the taxi had stopped. Another guy had a case full of lenses and remote gear taken from next to him by distraction thieves at a car rental counter.
