Yes
if its true you get redeye if the flash is close to the lens, how come rings are a popular portrate flash???

what's the best one??? i've seen one the size of a dinner plate, does anyone know if its any good??

damn - not quite the opening i was hoping for:naughty::D

 at JR.

Hmmm I've never thought of ring flashes as portrait flashes, but then I've never used them for that. The red eye effect is caused by the flash being too close to the axis of the lens and shining directly into the eye, lighting up all the tiny blood vessels on the retina at the back of the eye.

I'd have thought that the usual sized macro type ring flash would be a prime candidate for causing red eye as it's very close to the lens axis - all the way round in fact.

I suppose a dinner plate sized flash would move the flash tubes further out from the lens axis so I can see how it would be better, but ring flashes typically give very flat omni directional lighting so I wouldn't have thought they'd be a good choice if you wanted any light modelling in your subjects?

You get read eye if the flash is on top of the camera if you but the flash to the side you don't get read eye

yes thats the one i was looking at... at less than half the price of normal rings i wonder how well built it is and if its mobile enough to hand hold...
