ring flash for macro and the odd portrait

I have a bit of a fancy for a ring flash to use when shooting macro and also for the odd portrait. I'm shooting with Canon gear and currently my only portable lighting is a 580EX. I've been looking at all sorts of stuff, from cheap adapters that would attach to my flashgun to the expensive Canon ring flashes. Anyone got any suggestions/recommendations?

I have a Ring Flash Adapter like this http://www.flaghead.co.uk/pages/ringflash-intro.html Sounds like the ones you have been looking at. It works well for both portraits and macro, and you get the power of a big gun.

It's expensive though. The Coco version from ebay or Amazon appears to be identical and much cheaper, but I've never used one, or even seen one in the flesh for that matter.
