Before you spend any money have you tried just looking at flicker and the like? If you do want a 'proper' web site then you can get a really cheap deal from as little as about £2 a month from people like 1and1 = http://www.1and1.co.uk/?k_id=14456892 This is the company I use. Have a look around though, there are lots of good deals about.

If it's just for showing off Pics and you want it easy what about a Pro Flickr Account? You can put the photos into sets to keep things organised and has a simple uploader

The next step would be to take some time and learn abit of web development and get a free hosting package on Heart Internet, all you would need to buy is a web domain (the bit after www and before .co.uk / .com / .net etc).

You can simply use something like JAlbum (free) or even Lightroom (costs) to create galleries of photos for you and it would be relatively simple to keep updated.

I use SmugMu. It is a very classy looking site and is free for basic controls.
If you want to pay a small fee you can change it to look like a very cool branded site.

Check it out here :

i have a car forum ( www.torqueRevs.com ) which i think i paid about £25 for a years hosting...i just added Gallery2 to that and bought a domain name for a fiver...cant get cheaper than that IMO...

It dont look too bad for being "free" in a way.. not that there is anything wrong with photium or clickpic...

Infact if i did not have that i was going to go down the photium route..£7 a month or £80 up front. I did the free trial and it is honestly so easy to play with. Drag and drop and it magically does all the work for you.

A website for showing your pics ONLY is for plonkers IMHO :nono:

Flickr etc. is great for that and doesn't need a personal site at all

Your own site needs a purpose rather than being a posing tool

I know you fancy charging some day (now?) for your work, and as I (and others) have said before you already could make a go of it, so get a site that works for you in showcasing your work and attracting people who wish to book you

My site is expensive at a whopping £16pcm (derrrrr) but is now attracting over 1,000 hits a week and has gained me about 9 Wedding bookings this year by itself, along with about 6 child shoots (yes, I thought it odd too!). Why I like it is that it's bloody simple to use as it's a template, and if I get stuck their support system is fantastic

So, figure out exactly what the point of having your own site is - then look for something that does what you want, but don't get a "I'm MD - look at me" site just because you can - that's :nuts::nuts: IMO

thanks so far guys

It also helps that you are a good photographer and you prices are very competitive.
With smugmug it isnt just about showing your photos as flickr does, you can add as much as you want. i have just added the ability to buy my photos using PayPal.
Its not something SmugMug do, its just you put some javascript code in yourself, but seeing as i have no idea what coding is all about i follow simple instructions on the HUGE forum dedicated to customising SmugMug.
Here is the support forum : SmugMug Support

And my site (work in progress) is in my Sig.

:)

Wordpress is another free and easy to use option. It's a blogging thing but can do a lot more besides such as static pages to turn the blog into a full site. Plenty of plugins let you add galleries, etc.

i personally think that it's ok to have a site and not want anything back from it...

It would be lovely if i was good enough to produce pictures that people either wanted to buy or even book me to do some weddings or something. But in reality if it makes you happy to host your images so you can show your pals, then why not :-)

It's just a hobbie to some people

thanks for all thge info so far guys

really is an eye opener...

I guess I'm a 'plonker' then

I use clikpic, simple to set up, and enjoy it.
