Everyone else seems to have a big intro thing going on here, but I don't know what to write.

My aim from this is to gain a better understanding of photography and also learn to use my camera more creatively. I would like to take pics that don't need to Photoshop to make them look good as I think that is defeting the object of being a creative photographer, and also, anyone can take a pic and chop it about a bit to make it look good, there isn't much skill in that.

So that said, here is my first submission. Please post your comments, all welcome as I am here to learn :)

Hi Rich and welcome to the 52.
Welcome to the site too by the looks of things!

I joined 2009's 52 halfway through as a complete novice to photography and it really is a fantastic learning experience. I hope you get as much out of it as I have.

I love the subject that you've chosen for curved. Some really interesting shapes and textures - and the slight distortion around the edges adds to the overall feel.
I think that you'd maybe benefit from a bit of a contrast boost in the finished image to make a bit more of that lovely, flaky rust.

Welcome to TP Rich. I'm also hoping for the same understanding as you are from this challenge. I really like old decrepit type stuff, neglected and just not worth the effort of salvaging. It's a great subject matter. You have captured this very well. My only small gripe is the background concrete wall in the line of the joint of the pipe at the top, maybe a slightly different angle or some background blur

Thanks for your pointers, I had a play with the contrast and what a difference it makes! I'll try it out on the next shot if it's needed, thanks for that one Sarah :)

I hadn't really noticed the concrete in the background, it's actually a wooden fence, but you're right - a different angle would have worked better, again, something else to remember for next time, thanks John.

It might be simple and obvious stuff, but I'm learning already, I like it :D

I like it because it looks bulbous and ready to explode :exit:
quite a curvaceous subject.

I must confess, I was using my fisheye...

Nice idea, loving the compostion but it's a bit soft maybe? For where you are though it's a great shot, onwards and upwards!

Well, looks a little out of focus to me.

Ah, there is a reason for that, sounds a bit far fetched, but it's true - and possibly a lesson for everyone else...

Due to the cold weather, 2 of the plastic tabs that lock the legs of my tripod in place became brittle and snapped off when I tried to open them. Typicaly they were both on the same leg, so I could only use the tripod in the shortest height. The subject was at head height :(

So the lesson is this, DON'T buy cheap tripods! (just for reference, it is a similar one to that sold in Argos)

i really love this shot! what lens did you use?

I used my 1:3.5 fisheye

Ahem... we're on week 8 now... mechanical! Get snapping! :D
