I'm thinking of going to Richmond Park on Friday to have a look about for the Red Deer. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right area of the park to walk about, it looks like a big place. I'm aware it's a little early for the rut but I have some free time in London so I thought it could be worth a visit. Any help would be very appreciated.

I normally park in the Sheen gate car park then walk straight out in from the car park heading towards to roadway. Depending on what I then hear/see we'll determine where I head off to next.

Good luck anyway Rob. I'm thinking of heading that way in a couple of weeks time even though it's still early in the season but hey, might get lucky.

Pen pond car park is a good starting point ,even has a coffee stall , usually plenty of deer near by , might even see you over there ,as i'm there most days , trying to get shots of the migratory birds , regards Brian

I happen to have just raised the same topic over in the deer parks thread in Locations. When I go I want to make sure I'm there early, which means finding somewhere I can park before the official parking opens post-sunrise.

Thanks Brian and Di. I'm going to be coming down by train so I was thinking of taking the tube to Richmond and walking from there. Just mapped it and it's 2.5 miles (45 mins) walk to pen park, I think I may need to find out about local buses!

Hi Brian

You still been making it to the park lately? I'm heading down on Saturday with a bit of luck and just wondering what might else might be about and if the rut has started to build up. I know it's still fairly early but as I can't get back down that way next until end of October, this weekend is a hope and pray visit.
