Richmond parks great for deer, They're wild, but used to people. This is the time of year, (as the weather gets colder) they rutt and look for mates. This is amazing to watch, but you don't want to be too close! The park is huge, and you want to try and find the deer in the car before you go walking about. If your planning on some early morning shots the gates don't open till about 6 or 7am. In this case, I've always gone in the Ham Gate and there's been plenty of deer just as you walk in (but they can be anywhere!). You should here them calling and bellowing, and follow the noises. It seems early morning and night they are wild animals, but during the day they chill out and rest. Me and some friends were stalking a few deer in some bushes as a couple of ladies walked straight past them! we felt a little silly! But if there rutting or look sketchy keep well clear.

If your into your kingfishers, there's a lake in the middle with a resident kingfisher. He sits on the cane poles that stick out of the water. You can spend hours there!

Here's a couple of images i took last year.

Good luck...

Look forward to the images!

Some great shots there! I would really love a shot with the deer silhouetted and the warm orange sun coming through the trees! Pot luck you get the right sunrise and get the deer in the right place. I'll be up there again soon in search of the perfect picture! :)

Watch out for a possible TP meet at the park next month. We've been trying to get Martin (mipevo6) to set one up again like last year.

I'm up for some of that :)

Is there much "action" yet? Last year I went down to Bushy park, but I may try one of the other parks this year.

I am planning on a Bushy Park visit about 5am on Sunday - I've never been before and it looks huge - I'll be parking near the Diana Fountain - any tips on where I go after parking?

I'd rather go to Richmond park but that's just me. I tried Bradgate gate last year for the first time but felt you couldn't get as close to the deer (whilst still being sensible) as either Bushy or Richmond.

have you been to Bushy Di? I'm just looking for advice on where to go once I've parked up - or is it small enough to wander right round in an hour or so?

I spent a whole day at Bushy last year - arrived at first light and just headed for the noise! Really easy to find deer that wanted to be models - took me by surprise that they would just walk right past me! (I was more scared than they were!) I haven't been to Richmond so cannot comment on size comparisons. I found that once some "interesting" deer were found the odds were pretty good that sooner or later one of them would actually walk towards me rather than away!
Just checked and I went on October 14th last year - here are a couple of pics from that day.

ah that's cool thanks Tim, lovely pics too, especially the middle one :)

Went to Richmond this morning, and entered through Ham Gate. No sign of any deer early on, no calls/bellows, just a perfect sunrise! Got a few snaps of the day. Don't think there rutting yet.

Interesting tip about the kingfishers Keith, I'll have to investigate further. Richmond Park is virtually on my doorstep but I have yet to go and see the rutting deer....

If your going to go then make sure it's first thing in the morning, just before sunrise, the light is amazing! After my postings on the kingfisher I've not seen him since. Might be a summer visitor?

Just be prepared for lots of walking and an abundance of wildlife. It's great. A zoom lens is a must!

Good luck (post your pics) :-)
