I’m off to Richmond Park in the next couple of days to try and photograph the deer. My question is having injured an already dodgy shoulder dragging my 500mm F4 from the car park at Snettisham to the hides would a 100-400mm with/without a 1.4x t/c be long enough? Or do I need to cripple my other shoulder to match?

100-400 will be just fine. Richmond is awesome I normally just have the 300mm with 1.4x
Have fun I’ll be popping down at the weekend [emoji122]

Thanks Becca, I’d like to photograph the parakeets too, but I think that will be another visit....

Has been a long while since I went but think it was when I had a 70-300mm on my 40D.

You can get quite close but please beware & take care as testosterone levels will be rising the nearer the rut approaches so avoid getting too close.

I see what you mean, I put the 1.4x t/c on so got shots of the parakeets, then took it off so I didn’t have to keep walking back from them!

I can say with absolute authority having walked there daily for a decade you will be fine with an 85mm. OK, perhaps 135mm. Seriously, all you have to do is walk up and say left side right side please. If they are belling they sound savage but really don't care about humans although there is sometimes the odd one who doesn't get lucky goes nuts and charges around in mad circles!

Best shot I ever missed was 21 stags swimmign line astern across Pen Ponds, which is where you want to be.

Sadly Peter and Oscar from the coffee stall have moved back to Calabria or I woudl have texted them to give youa shot of Strega in yr coffee! Please post pics, I do miss the place.

PS Be there EARLY!

Oh dear. But the real triumph was the ice cream, they were supposed to supply Walls (according to their contract) but usually had a special mix made by a retired Italian schoolmaster in his garage. Probably the best soft ice cream I have EVER had.

What do you call early? Also, do they tend to rut early or a little later in the month? I know weather plays a big part but would be handy to know rough time of the month to go.

Thank you/

I got to the park at 7:15 (the vehicle gates open at 7) by then there were already hundreds of cyclists pounding round the roads. The deer had started rutting, although it was fairly low key, with mainly a bit of antler tangling, rather than head down charging!

Sounds about right - but once the rut starts it usually builds quite quickly. The sound is something else, worth thinking about bringing a decent mike if your camera does video. If you're lucky and get a soft sunrise or mist, the Pen Ponds should also yield some lovely bird shots. Enjoy.

I was over there yesterday in the rain and it was quite subdued lots of bellowing an the odd chase.

I was cycling in Richmond Park this morning and it was stunning. I wish I had been there with my camera instead of my bike . A snap with my phone had me kicking myself!

Not sure I would get too close to them at the moment, each year there are cases of people being injured getting too close when they are feeing frisky!5FC89132-DC78-40AD-8AC6-64FC800D6D94.jpeg

I'm hesitant to say anything because they CAN go barmy but honestly in a decade I never had a moment of trouble with the boys. Now spring with calves at foot can be very different, you get barren hinds who take on the aunty role and they can be seriously dangerous.....
