RF602 with NIkon D40 help

I have just recieved my RF602 flash trigger from FITP :thumbs:

I have sussed that the SB600 needs to be in manual mode and that I can't have TTL flash.

I have triggered the flash and taken a reading of F8 at 200 ISO using a flash meter. I then set this on my Nikon D40 in aperture priority mode.

I can get the flash to trigger (sometimes) but the shutter stays open on the camera for seconds as if no flash was connected.

I've just finished nights so I am probably doing something really stupid or missing the obvious but help me out guys please.
 
have you tried in manual mode, setting Aperature to F8 and A Shutter speed of 1/250th

I may be wrong but it sounds to me like the camera is trying to auto compensate for not detecting the flash by having a really long shutter speed
 
Thank-you mate.

Thats the obvious bit I was missing. I have managed to get it firing in a fashion. The batteries are low in the gun so it keeps going into stand-by. Hopefully the suggestion you made will sort it out when my new batteries turn up.
 
Stick it on full manual.

When you use A, the camera is trying to set a shutter speed for the ambient light, which is likely going to be quite long (since you're using flash).
 
Hi Andy,

Have you tried 1/500 with the RF602s? I'm wondering if they are fast enough for full D40 x-sync speed.
 
No Mike I didn't.

I've actually sold the D40 now and got a D90 which I've been using as a commander for the SB600. It makes life far easier although I have a couple of YN460's to play with so I'll have to get used to manual settings.
