We were recently contacted by a company called Wookee, https://wookee.shop , who were interested in promoting some camera accessories that they produce: specifically Hot Shoe Covers and Shutter Button Covers. They provided some samples for us to review, and to give away as we see fit. They arrived very nicely packaged with a little soft bag, cleaning cloth and polishing tool.

According to the Wookee website, the Hot Shoe Covers are designed either for specifically certain camera manufacturers (Nikon, Fujifilm, Pentax, Olympus, Hasselblad, Leica) showing the makers name and in some cases referencing the 100th anniversary, or they have generic pictorial designs, and they are available in silvered brass or gold coloured brass. The samples provided were a subset of these. I have fitted a Nikon 100th anniversary one to my D850, and it dooes fit well and look nice, a little decorative against the black body. It may be a case of beauty in the eye of the beholder, but I like it, decorating and protecting the hot shoe contacts (although I very rarely use them).

I’ve placed a silver brass decorative hot shoe cover and one of the Shutter Button Covers onto my old Pentax KX SLR, which also looks nice although I’d have to say the silver colour doesn’t match too well the silver body of the camera; maybe that’s down to the age of the camera though.

The shutter button screws into the shutter of the camera, so it doesn’t work for any of my Nikon, Pentax or Olympus DSLR’s, but fits nicely onto the KX and is actually quite handy, as It makes the shutter button stand substantially proud of the wind-on lever and frame counter, although time will tell whether this is a good or bad thing. Maybe a more modern camera such as one of the Fujifilm X-series compacts wouyld take the shutter covers more neatly?

Overall, these accessories are very nicely made and are solid metal, fit well, and are beautifully engraved. I shall leave the hot shoe covers on a couple of my camera bodies and will put a film through the Pentax KX to see how the shutter button affects camera usage.

On practical points: the items are made in the USA, and prices are in US Dollars. They aren’t cheap, but I think that reflects the fact of their being solid metal, expertly engraved, and a niche product. They have been selling these items on Etsy for a couple of years successfully but are now looking to do more direct sales. Hot shoe covers vary in price from about $40 to $80, and shutter button covers from $35-70, with a similar variety of designs.

Wookee are offering a 15% discount for Talkphotography.co.uk members (quote code TPEXCLUSIVE15 in their shop), and TP will apparently get a small commission on any sales to members. Do I recommend them? Well, they are nice and they are decorative, so if you are into dressing up your camera, then yes, I would say they are nice little embellishments to your pride and joy camera. They won’t help you to take a winning competition entry, but they might be a talking point at a club or similar get-together.
