Detailed Review

In Use. I have been in possession of the lens for several months now and feel ready to pass comment. It is by far my best ever lens purchase I have ever made (I also own a Canon 70-200L).
It is an excellent lens for landscape work with good colour reproduction, sharpness and it handles flare fairly well.
There can be slight distortion, which is more noticeable if you shoot buildings at 10mm. This can however be corrected in Canon’s own DDP, to a satisfactory level.
I often read enquiries relating the vignetting with filters. In my own experience I found that using Hitech Filters in a Cokin P wide holder, there was slight vignetting at 10 and 11mm. I ended up using blu tac to hold the filters in place without the holder. I have now moved to Lee filters with a wide adaptor and that has solved the problem.
It appears to perform best at f8, although that is not to say it is poor at any other setting.

Build Quality. If feels and looks similar to an ‘L’ lens . So far no problems and it has been used on a regular basis.

Strengths – It can be used for a wide range of photography and is an excellent lens for landscapes.

Weaknesses Can only be used on crop cameras, therefore if you trade up to full frame it will be of no use.

Conclusion I have never had the chance to try the other makes in this wide field, but I would be very surprised if they are any better. If I could only have one lens in my bag this would be the one!

Images – Here are a few taken with 10-22 on a 50d

Thanks Peter.

I have just purchased one of these a few days ago on here. Looking forward to using it.

Well reviewed Peter.

I totally agree. It took me many months to decide on what UWA to go for. For landscape that little bit of extra reach does make a difference aswell, although primarily shot at the wide end.

What a helpful review. I have been close to buying one of these for the last few months and I think you have given me the push I needed.

Interesting reading regarding the filter choice to negate vignetting. I will have to look into Lee filters.

Just to balance things up - mine was good at landscapes - not so impressive closer in.

Nice review, thanks.

I'm looking for a super wide for my 450d, would you say this lens is worth the premium over the sigma 10-20?

I've just got hold of one of these to replace a Tamron 10-24 I had stolen. The difference in quality of image is easy to spot, the quality of build and the USM also add goodness to the overall package.

The 10-22 is probably the best uwa for a Canon 1.6 crop camera but it is by no means perfect.
The build quality is nowhere near the standard of a Canon L lens-check out the build of the 15-85 EFS to see what a well built EFS lens feels like.
There is softness around the edges but the main problem with the lens is it's control of colour fringing. This can only be described as "just about ok".

Saying that, the 16-35 Mk2 on a full frame body doesn't exactly set the world on fire.

All the above is based on my experience of owning 3X 10-22 lenses and using them on 20,30,40,50 and 7D cameras.

Gary

Nice review, thanks.

I have a sigma 10-20mm 3.5 which i might get rid of to get a canon

What would be an alternative to this lens?

Thanks alot! What a list! You think the canon is the better of all of these others? Is it that soft around the edges?

Ill have a butchers at the others you list! ta

A nice, concise and well balanced review.:thumbs:

Just to add a note to Gary's list of aternative lenses, the Sigma 12-24 F4-5.6 can be used on both crop and FF bodies, the downside is that filters can't be used (the front element protrudes too far)

Good review, as Les said. It's a shame (from what I can see) there is an L series UWA like this. I suppose the 16-35 could be considered (if FF) ??

From a couple of reviews of this it seems it shares L glass and is all but an L lens!
I'm totally itching for one, but am getting married in August and can't justify it right now!! So I think I gotta earn it with photography!....hmmmm

Pity there isn't a version for full frame. WA lens on FF are mostly L lenses which are over 1k

Thanks Peter, very useful as this is a lens I'm looking to add to my collection sooner rather than later.

I was torn between the Sigma 10-22 or this lens, seeing those pics has made my mind up for me, Canon it is then :D

there is a nice example in the classifieds for sale

Good view, im trying to get one but might end up with a sigma 10-20mm

I've had the EF-S 10-22 for some time now. I use it mainly for church interiors where it gives excellent detail and correctable distortion when tilted slightly to get everything in the frame.

Thoroughly recommended!

Been reading the threads about the Canon 10-22mm, and now decided to buy one. Waiting for it to be delivered, and looking forward to expermenting with it! :)

The pictures provided are great. Wish I had kept saving for this lens rather than going for the Sigma 10-22mm f4-5.6 as it is a little soft on the left edge. An infamous problem with the Sigmas that they can't seem to get right...
