Have been thinking over the last few days.

I have been looking at my lens collection and may decide to go prime only. The reason being is that my nifty fifty lives on my camera and does 99% of my stuff, as I love the sharpness and speed it can offer over zoom. My other main lens is a 17 - 85mm IS USM which is razor sharp but a little slow at F4. I then own a Signma 70 - 300mm lens which I think I have sold for £100.00 with a filter.

So, I think I may sell the 17 - 85mm IS and go for a 85mm 1.8 prime to compliment my 50mm. I can then start saving for a decent zoom as back up but may go for a once only purchase of a 100 - 400L which is ideal for my street stuff and occasional sport.

Any thoughts and does anyone else use prime only?

I use Primes only Diego. There is no doubting that primes have the edge on zooms but are not as versatile obviously.

If you are prepared to do a little leg work then go for it mate.:thumbs:
 
Yep, primes here (though not many). At the moment I have a 50mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8, and 135 3.5, and should be adding an 85 1.8, 35 f2, and 200 2.8L fairly soon.
 
Whether your going prime exclusive or not I can definately recommend the 85 f1.8, very fast, very sharp, and well built.

i thought about going prime only and i use my 50 and 85mm f1.8s alot, but it just wasnt viable when i changed what i shoot, i need the ability to zoom in to frame as its not always possible otherwise
 
Thanks guys, Interesting replies. I think that I will certainly get the 85mm too as it cheap enough to warrant having anyway and may put some feelers out regarding my 17 - 85mm.

Nikon or Canon?
The Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 I tried recently was very good and we'll be re-equipping next month, replacing my current 17-35 f/2.8.
