I took a photo which a friend wants to get printed onto a large canvas.

I processed it, partly on Gimp and then a bit more on Flickr. I really like the way it ended up on Flickr (the sharpening tool is much better than Gimp's).

However, when I save the Flickr image to a USB stick the Flickr image is only 75kb.

The original Tiff file is 29Mb.

Any guidance as to how I can process the Tiff file to achieve the sharpening etc I desire yet maintain the file size to allow for an accurate enlargement.

(I really must learn more about PP'ing) :'(

Flickr will downsize the image so that it's suitable for use in the web hence the change to 75Kb.Also remember sharpening for web is different to sharpening for print

If the image is going onto canvas sharpening may not be that important, as the texture of the canvas will tend to remove a lot of the image sharpness anyway.

The other point to be aware of is that you can over sharpen and image. It may look good on you monitor but then printing sharpness is added and it starts to look very unreal.

I've not used the GIMP , but in Photoshop and Lightroom, when I'm working on an image to be output to large size tend to keep the sharpening level down.Knowing that some output sharpening will be added by the printer whatever it is. However what sharpening you use does depend on the output medium, the printing device and the original image, plus the final size of the print .It's a lot to do with experience.
.
My best suggestion is to find a good printer, one you can talk to and ask them to check the sharpness of your image prior to printing.

yeah thanks handy to know.

Michael.
