Restoring Photos

I've managed to get hold of some precious photos and I now need to know, what's the best way you find to restore them?

They're all scanned in, but some have stains/fading from sunlight/scratches.

What methods would you use?
I've googled this and will look to find the best method for me but interested in others opinions as I want to get them as perfect as possible.

A couple are in colour, a couple are school photos so black/white uniforms, ones black/white.

Done a few by running them through Photoshop CS5, cloning, adjusting levels etc, etc - varying degrees of success depending on the extent of the damage and the importance of the photo.

Restoration is a huge subject and it's impossible to give you an answer without seeing the shots. Each one must be individually assessed and treated - there is no set way of doing it.

as said without seeing them its impossible to say, I do a fair bit of this and each one is different
