How can I resize a photo in Aperture 3? The only way I have worked out how to do it is to export it at the size I want then re-import it to finish editing.

Hi Steveo!

The idea is to resize on export, do all your edits and then when you need to use a copy for web or print etc, you export it in the preferred format :)

Exporting and re-importing is unnecessary as it's a false economy.

Hope that helps.

Steveo, let's ask like this.. why do you want to have a smaller resolution file with less data to work on?

I usually keep a full size version then a small 800px version to share on the net. When I make the 800px version I like to sharpen a little more en the full size. That's why I say that I'd need to re-import to do the final sharpening. Any suggestions?

Does Aperture not have an output sharpen in the export menu?

Hmmm, looks like there isn't one mate:

Which is a bit of a disappointment. At least they discuss some alternatives though.

Failing those, you could do your export sharpening for your 800px versions in photoshop, set up an action and droplet maybe so you could run batches instead of having to them individually?.

It would still save you some drive space

Frustrating eh, this might stop me buying A3 tbh. Unless someone can suggest a good workflow.

It would put me off too, I did use Aperture a good while ago, it didn't suit me at all.

I use Lightroom and CS4.

Lightroom is essentially a photo management program but like Aperture, it has editing facilities as well as web gallery creation.

For basic edits and organisation Lightroom does the job, batch processing is simple and fast and you have a superb output sharpening feature in the export menu, you can even save all your export preferences in the form of a preset such as the size (in your case 800px for forum/net use) as well as the output sharpening strength.

To be honest, I don't know what I'd do without Lightroom.

I still use photoshop but for the more advanced editing, such as multiple layers and compositing.

Photoshop and Lightroom are designed to work 'back to back' and have a smooth and intelligent integration, sweeping away any need to keep anything more than an original raw file and maybe a PSD/TIFF.
Re-importing and duplicating files is really not necessary with this combination.

Download the trial and see what you think.

If you have any questions after having a good look around, post them in this thread and I'll help wherever I can ;)

I'm the opposite of Thomas, I much prefer Aperture to Lightroom. The brushes are so much better and I just prefer the way things are laid out.

You can make a duplicate of the image which you can then sharpen as you like and export. You can then stack the images together, you know where everything is and it solves the problem

Carl, even if I made a duplicate it would still be full size so It would be very hard to judge the amount of sharpening needed for the 800px version prior to exporting at 800px. Or am I missing something?
