Just been searching for information on the best way to resize a 2:3 aspect image for printing so it fits in an A4 frame. this iseemed to be the best explanation I could find from googling but wanted to check with you all to see if the method below will look any good or if you have any better methods. The main thing is that I dont want to crop the photo at all and want it to end up about A4 size.

"I print my 8.5x11 materials with a 6.67x10 inch image. There's no cropping and there is still some border left. The difference is that A4 is about 5mm wider on the width and 20mm on the length than the 8.5x11 letter size. I would suggest a 180x270mm image size if you are using a 2:3 aspect camera."

Any advice appreciated

I wouldn't bother resizing it. If you're printing at home then the printer driver/software will handle the resizing very well. Just print to an a4 size and make sure it's centred and away you go.

Or am I missing the point?

I'm getting it professionally printed on a large roll so I need to resize the image. The problem is that A4 isnt an exact enlargement of a 3:2 ratio photo, (which most dslr images are i think). So if I enlarge the image to A4 (210mm x 297mm), I have to crop a small amount off each side, and a larger amount off the top and bottom (in portrait view). This is what I dont want to do. So the quote within my first post suggests enlarging (rather than cropping) the photo to 180x270mm (slightly less than A4 size) and then cutting the paper to A4 and having a white 'boarder' of 5mm on the width and 20mm on the length in addition to the frame.

Hope that makes sense???

Just wondering if anyone has tried this before and if it looks any good or if there's a better way of getting an A4 result.

After looking into it some moere, I think the easy solution might be to just get the photo printed at 8x12 inches (which is close enough to A4) and then find a frame??

I'm with you now!

but yeah, print it 8x12 and then get a frame to match.

or you could get it printed as you said or slightly smaller and then get your local picture framing shop to cut you a custom mount board for it so it hides the white borders? Would probably look better than just slapping the shot straight into a frame too.

I'd go for the 12x8 as well simply because trimming photos is a pain and just extra work for little gain, especially if you can get a mount to cover the edges.

Ted, just correcting your A4 figures:

210 - 180 = 30 so you'd have 15mm borders on the sides.

297 - 270 = 27 so you'd have 13.5mm borders top and bottom.

Make your print size 262x175mm and you'll have a 17.5mm border on each edge.

It's not exact but the crop will only lose 0.333mm

edit: a 261x174mm print will fit exactly with a 18mm border

It's actually a ratio of (4√2):(1/(4√2))

I print my A4 prints at home buy a larger frame size (cant remember right now) and get specific mounts for them - cost me about £3 from local framer.
