Hi
I’ve been cheeky enough to use the Photography and General.. forum to try to get some recruits for some research I’m doing on digital photography. This generous community has already posted a lot of useful responses. One pointed out it’d be a good idea to introduce myself here, so just thought I’d say hello.

So, basically I’m here for my research – the stuff on digital photography is part of a larger project looking at how consumer technologies change everyday practices. The research is publicly funded and its carrying no commercial interests or links. DP is interesting to look at for all sorts of reasons, but mostly because of the way digital is both continuing the traditions of analogue photography but also changing what photography is and can be - whether its for the pro with a 20Mp SLR or a kid who's working out what to do with a camera phone.

But, guess what, I try to write research proposals that refect something I'm interested in anyway. I don't consider myself A Photographer, especially seeing the photos in the galleries here, and the lists of gear in people's signature footers. After dabbling with analogue SLR since a teen, I've now got a 3 year old 'prosumer' olympus compact. Most pictures I take are more or less conventional family album fodder, but I do try aim for technically OK pictures and have been known to wander off from full programming and try to remember what aperture's all about..

So, I'm in the lucky position of being here for my work, but being personally interested too, so hope to be a useful member of the community.

Bye for now

Matt
