Rescuing a corrupt memory card

A friend of mine has an issue with a memory card she used whilst on a trip to Tanzania. Her husband went to back up the XD card but the unit came up with an error. Since then she has been unable to open it via a card reader or view the images in the camera.

Is there anyway of rescuing the images?

the sandisk extreme 3 cards come with rescue software, i think i got a spare copy lying round somewhere if you want it, will have a look

You can download a pc/mac demo of Sandisk RescuePro. That will at least attempt to read the card and identify any images there. Unfortunately the demo version does not allow you to save any identified images - you have to splash the cash for that - about £20.00.

my neice managed to format a full card last weekend and i used rescue pro but it didnt find anything.. i think it must have REALLY formatted it!!

When I recover lost data I generally have to format the drive to be able to access it, the software I use can recover most everything, so don't be worried if the disk has been formatted.

I recovered 8000 pictures from a laptop that PC World said could not be recovered with the software so don't panic, most data can be got back.

I usew the sandisk rescue disk that has worked well for me but only if the disk has not been formatted. A few nights ago (after I had transfered them to the computer) I cut the images from the card and then used the rescue disk and it found the images, but when I then formatted the disk and tried again it did not come up with anything so if the disk has not been formatted its worth a try. I am in the same area as you if you want to pick up a rescue disk at the weekend.

Try Photorescue. Not free but it will enable you to see if you have images that can be recovered. You can then decide if its worth buying. From experience I find it's better than either the Lexar or Sandisk ones.

You could try Recuva http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/ or PC Inspector http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/info.htm?language=1 the files are still their as formatting just overwrites the info with 0s and 1s, if you truly wish to delete any memory card then Active Kill Disk is what you need, be aware that the files are still available only if in a good state for recovery.
