Hi all

I wasn't really sure where to stick this, but i see it being asked quite often so while looking for a camera to buy I phoned cannon and was told the following was requited for a Cannon UK warranty.

- Proof of purchase must have a UK address (yours and theirs)
- How much you paid for the item in £
- Date of the purchase
- Name of the item

This applies to all Cannon photography equipment.

Hope that's of some help!

I've also emailed Nikon, I'll add what they require when they get back to me.

Prehaps worth sticking somewhere?

Regards
Jen

Is this UK warranty or EU warranty? UK warranties come under EU warranties now I believe and it actually depends on when you send it for repair what info they require in my experience.

Good point. I asked about UK warranty so I'm going on that.

This is just standard warranty information for most manufacturers, pretty common knowledge really.
I think you mean Canon though, not cannon. ;)

What a terribly ignorant post.

Ignorant? No.
I've known this information for years so my post isn't ignorant. Ignorant would mean that the post/ poster was lacking in knowledge, which I'm not.
My entire post is true and factual, just because you don't like my post doesn't mean its ignorant. :)

Thanks for posting - it should clear the mist regarding items purchased from places like HDEW

I'm pretty sure you are wrong on both bold points, for a start Canon operate a European warranty service, so there is no need for UK proof of purchase, it can be from any European Union retailer.

Phoning a retailer/manufacturer is a pretty good way of getting wrong information.

Not all Canon products sold in UK are European sourced. Some are sourced in USA - by Kerso for example. His website states:

Canon products have a 1 year Canon USA warranty valid in all of Europe with UK invoice provided.

Good point, while I think the OP was well intentioned they were a little naive in believing official guidance would be accurately obtained with a telephone call. In most offices it's the most junior staff member who gets lumbered with these sort of enquiries, and rather than look ignorant they make up something that sounds plausible.

You may be ignorant of the definition of ignorant!

The pertinent definition:-
ig·no·rant
adjective /ˈignərənt/

Lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated
- he was told constantly that he was ignorant and stupid

Lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about something in particular
- they were ignorant of astronomy

Discourteous or rude
- this ignorant, pin-brained receptionist

Easily angered
- I is an ignorant man—even police don't meddle with me

:)

I thought the higher priced lenses were covers by an international guarantee.

Every item I have (camera or lens) has had its serial number entered onto the Canon CPS site and has been 'covered' irrespective of where/when it was bought. I had a question about my 500F4ISII and the Canon rep never asked where it was bought. I personally think there is a lot of smoke and mirrors about warranties.:|

No, generally any item bought in the UK only has a uk or sometimes eu warranty. Some items sourced from the USA will have UK/EU warranty depending on paperwork as was mentioned earlier I the thread regarding the likes of Kerso.
Ultimately though it's down to the specific manufacturer and if you want to know for certain what the warranty is for anything you're looking at buying do your research first .....
