Hi,

Would it be an unreasonable request to ask our wedding photographer for a selection of Tiffs as all the photos will be in colour and when i asked if there will be any edited in B&W he said that i could convert them. (He knows i am a photographer).
Only thing is i don't want to convert jpegs as i don't want to lose IQ and jpegs are lossy files.

What are your thoughts?

Matt

1 conversion to black and white will not degrade the image to the point where you would actually notice. You can always ask Him.

Hi,

By definition a TIFF isn't always in colour. A simple conversation to B & W won't lose quality in a JPEG (assuming its just done once), I'd be wary about suppling TIFFs personally

Why would you be wary about supplying tiffs?

Sorry, I should of been a bit less rushed in my response. Purely because of file size, a 5dmk3 produces tiffs of 130mb and a d800 200 mb (ish) without layering. Tbh I'd struggle transferring a weddings worth of those.

Hugh, I just need a few and I probably should have mentioned he is shooting with a 1D mk2 so as it's not full frame I think that should be doable.

In that case I'd be hard pressed to see a reason not to let you have them. If for whatever reason he won't its worth knowing there is no reason you can't convert jpeg to tiff should you wish to

As alreay said your not getting much advantage if your just doing a B+W conversion, at any normal sizes you wont see the difference.

Hi,

He/she may not want to release their photographs, for you to PP them to something he/she may not like. Then, he/she has work out there containing their metadata identifying them as the pictures owner, that they feel doesn't portray the quality of work they are happy to represent them. This has no bearing on your ability to PP images, more a general issue of a professional tog controlling their work.

:)

I'm a little concerned that a professional wedding photographer won't provide a selection if b&w edits when the customer has asked for them. It's a little unprofessional and unreasonableon his part - but I wonder why you went with a photographer who wasn't going to give you the product you wanted?

I agree Alastair, I woud say most wedding photographers have the option for black and white or sepia (as well as the colour) after all it's easy enough to do with Lightroom/Photoshop.
