Can anyone recommend a decent UK based retail outlet? I am looking to spend around £1500 on a new DSLR and I would like the piece of mind of buying it from a 'proper' shop not to mention the added bargaining power of hard cash! I know that you can get some bargains from HK but tbh I am not prepared to take the risk, so I am asking if anyone has any recommendations (good or bad) with anyone other than Jessops who in my experience are expensive and not very helpful!
I am based near Oxford in the south east but I am quite willing to travel (within reason) for the right deal and of course good service.
Can anybody help?

You are not too far from the doorstep of Digital Depot in Stevenage. Prices are competitive, service is very good. With the odd exception, most of my kit comes from them.
 
Out of curiousity which camera are you thinking of buying? There are shops specialising in certain brands eg Grays of Westminster which are solely Nikon.
 
Second vote for Digital Depot. I find one of their staff mildly objectionable, but the rest of the guys there are fantastic!

Jessops expensive? I picked up my D300 body there on Friday for £965 - that's the cheapest I've ever seen in the UK...
 
RGB-tech are very competitively priced, amongst the cheapest in the country, and everyone there is an enthusiast, google rgb tech :)
 
There is a Nikon D300 at Dixons for £970.00.

Well I stand corrected, thanks for the info, will give them a second chance, I understand that they will try and 'price match' so maybe there is a competitive deal to be had there?! Here's hoping...

You're also on the doorstep (almost) for Morris Photographic in Chipping Norton. It's about 40 miles from High Wycombe. Not sure what kind of deal you'd get there but I do know they have an excellent range of bags and tripods on open display.
 
Another vote for Cameraworld and I would also like to add Jacobs to list, whom I found to be excellent when recently purchasing a 40D and two lenses, I was also very pleased with the price.

As for branches, I use the Wells Street one in London (Cameraworld) and the Jacobs store in New Oxford Street, again in London.
