Hi again,

I'm looking to replace the 18-55mm IS kit lens that came with my SLR... do you have any recommendations for doing so? I've been looking at a couple of Canon lenses with similar ranges, but I'd also be interested in Sigma/Tokina lenses of a similar focal range.

I have a nifty fifty and a 55-250 IS so have those ranges pretty much covered. :)

Do you have the budget for a good lens?

I would have to say the sigma 17 - 70mm. Best £200 I have ever spent!

Why? In what way are you dissatisfied with it? Answer that, and you'll be half way to knowing what you want instead.

Very good point. I'm unimpressed with the sharpness when I close down the aperture- f11 to f16, for example, makes barely any difference. Add that to the fact that the colour repro seems off when compared to the 55-250, and that manual focusing is a pain in the ass.

This was a great lens when I first got in to photography, but I've gradually been learning it's limitations.

I found that I wanted a little more than 55mm, although you can have all ranges covered in 2 or 3 lenses, I found it a pain changing lenses when that perfect shoot came along. My 17-70 very rarely leaves my camera, its very sharp and good solid quality. I knwo others on here use it so may be worth doing a search for their comments too.

Do you mean the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 DC Macro? Or is there an alternative?

Bloody hell. The camera's only been out a few months, yet you make it sound like your an old pro.:)

I guess thats photgraphy for you - you always want something a bit better.

Heh, not quite, though I did do some photography before I got my 450, so I hit the ground running.

Anyway, it's always good to hear the opinions on here even if I don't end up replacing the kit lens.

another vote for the sigma 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC macro...replaced my sony kit lens with this one and what a difference,IQ is improved by lots, and although i'm no expert...i've not found any limitations with it

Is this this the one?

There's also this which is slightly more expensive:
