I am looking to replace my 50mm f/1.8 lens within the next few months as this has happened to it

It seems to have come apart.

Should I get the same 50mm mkII or look at the 85mm f/1.8? Also would you say the 50mm f/1.4 was better than the f/1.8 version and worth the extra ££?

Thanks

The choice between the 85mm and 50mm depends on how much you use and like the 50mm and what kind of photography you mainly do.

If you like the 50mm and use it a lot then it is worth upgrading to the 1.4 USM model (but don't rule out the Sigma 1.4). The 1.4 falls into Canons mid range lenses (I own the 28mm 1.8 and 100mm 2.0 and have used the 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4) and the build quality is far better than the plastic lenses.

I havent used the 50mm in ages and then when our little girl was born I started using again as I remembered how cracking it was! But then it broke!

I dont like the fact its soo light and plasticy but I dont want to spend another £100-£150 on top to get the f/1.4 version if its not that much better.

I mainly do portraits really so perhaps the 50mm is better as I dont have a great lot of room to be able to move further away with the 85mm.
