Which lens would you say is a good substitute for the Canon 18-55mm IS?

I fancy something with a bit more reach and also not too big a price tag! Not sure on budget but don't want to spend more than £150.

Hey,

I had both the Canon 17-85mm USM IS (about 150-180 second hand) and the Sigma 18-125mm OS HSM (150-180 second hand, both are good lenses for the money if you are wanting to go for more reach over the kit lens.

You wont improve on the 18-55 IS with that budget, better to supplement it with another lens.

There's plenty around the 55-200 range to chose from starting with the very good for the money tamron 55-200 that can be picked up new for under £100..

Might look for the 55-250 IS canon. Supposed to be good?

I have a 28-135 IS which is nice and sharp and gives that extra reach.
It depends what you want to take and what reach you need, I get the feeling that the greater the zoom range the greater the compromises are.
135mm isn't far but on a crop it's 200 effectivley which is pretty good, the drawback is the 28mm end which aint wide enough.
Have a long hard think about what you actually need. Your budget may get you a 28-135 IS, mine has served me well

It's what I went with, and the combo of 18-55 and 55-250 works really well... the 55-250, for the price, is a great little lens too.

I agree with other posters that you won't beat the 18-55 for your £150 budget. I don't think you'd really beat it for three times that money (you could get something with a wider zoom range, but not significantly better optically).

A colleague of mine with a 450D and my partner with a 1000D both have the 18-55IS and I've always been impressed with the results. I'd love to have a play with it, but it won't fit my 5D...

Ok, thanks. Will stick with the Kit lens and look for a 55-250 IS.

You wont regret it. The first lens I got for my 550D was the 55-250, and I was very pleased with the IQ. AF speed isn't too impressive, and it's a bit noisy when zooming\focusing, but overall, you'd be hard pressed to find something better in that reach on a low budget.

Good move. My colleague also has the 55-250 and it produces nice results. He has a Sigma 150-500 also, but tends to prefer the 55-250 for any situation not requiring the longer reach. The 55-250 is a brilliant lens for the money.

Yea, seen quite a few reviews saying it was a great lens. Just got to wait until after christmas now as money is not there to buy one.

Just to add to the above really, the 55-250IS is a cracker. Bought my daughter one and she loves it, nice weight as well.

Thanks but still too much for me to spend at the mo as got problems with car, loads of birthdays coming up and christmas!!
