I'm looking at replacing my 400D kit lens (finally) and so far have the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC in my sights, are there any other alternatives I should be considering, maybe the canon 17-85 IS?

Thanks an advance!

Tamron 28mm -75mm F2.8 I took mine with me to New Zealand and found it to be brilliant especially in low light, sunsets etc.

@ neil, hmm maybe more than the wife might like me to spend but I could be persuaded. Is it significantly better than either o the lenses I mentioned?

@ denis, I'm not wanting to loose much if anything from the wide end. But thx for the suggestion.

I have a 400D and just replaced my kit lens with the Sigma 17-70 on Tuesday. It is a great lens and it knocks the pants off the kit lens from initial impressions and I am looking forward to playing with it some more. It was between the Sigma and the Tamron 17-50 2.8, which is a cracking lens and a constant 2.8. I felt I needed the extra reach of the 70mm at the long end as a walkaround lens which is why I settled on the Sigma, but if you don't need it then I would probably lean towards the Tamron.

I replaced the kit lens on my old 350d with the Sigma 17-70, now it's my standard lens and is always on the front of my 40D.

It's amazingly sharp and fits perfectly in my arsenal with my 10-22mm (for wide angle landscapes) my 100mm macro and my 70-300mm IS for wildlife (and stuff thats, you know... far away!)

2 shots taken with it for reference:
Wide @ 17mm

Full zoom @70mm

Tamron 17-50, its hardly ever off my camera.

My thoughts exactly! The next purchase is probably going to be the Sigma 10-20, followed by either a 70-200L or the 70-300 IS. The 17-70 was part of looking to see what lenses I will be getting in the future and getting one that would compliment them well.

Another vote for the tamron 17-50 here.
Rarely off the camera and I can't remember the last time I used the nifty.

The difference in reach between 50mm and 70 can usually be overcome by walking about a bit

Looks like it will be either the sigma or tamron then, but which one.......

I think it will have to be the sigma 17-70 the length is good for me, not being f2.8 across it's full range isn't great but ofsetting that against it being nearly £100 cheaper than the f2.8 variants has me leaning in it's favour. It also seems to get good reviews from you guys.

Why not have a look at the second hand value. It seems to me there isn't a great difference in price between the three (sigma 18-50, 17-70; tamron 17-50)

I've seen the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 Mint for £245 so far but that's about it on the sites I'm aware off. New the Sigma 17-70 can be had for £220 and about 200 second hand so yes not much to choose between them although I'm still tempted by the full warranty of the 17-70 unless anyone sees a good deal either new or 2nd hand on either of the 18-50's I might end up going with the 17-70.

I was looking at selling my sigma 18-50 EX DC f2.8 in new condition with lens caps, hood, case and box for £190 delivered. Not sure how much they go for on ebay but i'm sure if your patient will get a good deal.

Just picked up a sigma 18-50 f2.8 for £195 delivered from the bay, will let you know how I get on with it once it arrives. However I now realise there are macro and non macro variants of this lens and it looks like I have the non macro version, although from what I've read optically the two are very similar anyway but the non macro version lacks the close focus abilities, is that about right? Maybe its not the bargain I had hoped for but a good lens never the less?
