Just had a call from my brother, and my trusty old 24-105 F4 has developed a constant "Error 01." 
With a smattering of man maths, and hiding my credit card bill from the mrs this could result in a new lens.
Is there a good upgrade for the 24-105? I use it extensively on my 5d and 1D3 as my go to walk about lens.
This really has been my go to lens, I've used it for everything, portraits, "snaps" of my 18month old, weddings (and similar events), and even gets pulled out to shoot sports when my 50 is too long!
Is a 24-70 my only real upgrade path?
I'm worried i might miss the long end, especially on my 5d. (now i'm thinking maybe a 24-70 and a 85 but even my man maths struggles then!)
(Other lenses include sigma 50 1.4, 70-200 2.8, Canon 100 macro, and 17-40 F4.)
Budget will just about stretch to a second hand 24-70 (600ish) Or I could just be boring and get the 24-105 fixed.
