Replacement camera from insurance company - Is it a fair exchange?

Hi Guys,

My mates wife drove over his rucksack which contained his Canon Ixus 50, the insurance company have offered to replace it with a Samsung Digimax L210.

He has asked me if this is a fair exchange, but I now nothing about compact cameras.

Do you think this is a fair exchange or shouldhe push for a new canon? We are guessing the price range is £100 to £150 on this.

I'd check the policy as I would certainly want the same one or the current one of the same brand again.
 
Personally I'd insist on another camera over a Samsung, or Jessops vouchers / cash . Everything Samsung badged I've had over the years, either personally or within the family has ultimately disappointed!

I'd say you have had bad luck there mate. I have a Samsung LCD HDTV, its awsome, and I own a GX10, again awsome!

We have Samsung P&S at work and they seem to be ok little beasts, can't comment more than that I'm afraid. Although I would be questioning why on earth the Insurance company want to replace with a different manufacturer. OK so it may be a form fit function replacement but still doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless Cannon have stopped that particular product range and no new/latest is available I'd push for a Cannon Form Fit Function replacement.
 
We all have our own experiences, what one finds great another gets a duff experience.

I'd think twice/never go back to O2, but thats a different topic! :lol:
 
I'd request another Canon.
 
:agree: I'd push them for a replacement Canon. When I dropped my Benq laptop the insurance tried to palm me off with a Samsung one which cost a third as much,had a similar processor, but was twice as heavy, with a smaller screen and 1 hour of battery life, against the 4.5hrs my old one had had.

I stood my ground and ended up with new Sony Vaio which had a better spec than my Benq and had I bought it instead of the original one would have set me back £500 more, so it's worth holding out as they will try and give you the cheapest replacement item they can get away with.
 
In terms of the original post, I agree with pushing for a like for like replacement, because i fnothing else, you have experience of the current camera and no idea of whther the Samsung offered in replacement is as good, regardless of actual specifications. In terms of Samsung, I have a samsung really basic P&S which is excellent, 2 of my friends have high spec versions of the same, again, excellent, and we have a Samsung HDTV, which is superb, even compared to our neighbours Sony which cost him twice as much.
 
If your mate likes the Samsung, the specs are good. However, if he prefers the "IXUS" look, he should push for for a replacement IXUS (whatever model replaced the 50)
 
I was a home insurance advised about 12 years ago. The policy will be new for old and they should replace the item with a similar model. Your only argument is that the Samsung is not a 'similar' item. The IXUS brand is a premium brand and you pay extra for this. I would check out what the current equivalent of an IXUS 50 is and insist on this. This might be an IXUS 850 or something like that.
 
I thought he'd be better off going with a canon, but thats because I shoot canon :D

I thought he'd be better off with a Canon they're really good at making little cameras....... Anything bigger than an ixus though and well........ :nikon:
