I think this is probably a very silly question but I'd be grateful for advice from those who know.

We have a kitchen mixer tap very similar to the one in this link -

There is a leak on the hot side of this tap and I having looked online I know there are is a multitude of cartridges and you have to be careful to get the correct one but if I can get the right one, the replacement looks easy.

The both the hot and cold pipes to the tap have isolation valves.

If I isolate the hot water supply and remove the cartridge from the hot side can I still use the cold tap? As it is a mixer tap will cold water spew out of the hole left on the hot side?

I know I can put the defective cartridge back in, while waiting for the replacement one to arrive, but I'm worried that just removing the cartridge might make the leak even worse when I put it back in temporarily.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense.

Thanks

Dave

Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't...
Only way is to try it .
There will be some leakage when you remove the cartridge, the usual dripage.

It depends if it is a mixer or filler tap.
If it is a mixer tap then the cold will spill out.
If it is a filler tap then it will not.
A mixer tap mixes the hot and cold in the tap body while a filler tap keeps hot and cold seperate until they come out of the nozzle.
As it is a kitchen tap it is probably using cold direct from the mains so it should be a filler tap to prevent hot water getting into the mains supply.
If you take off the aerator ( the bit that is screwed on to the tap outlet ) you should be able to see if the spout is split into 2 or is just a single pipe. If it is split into 2 you can use the cold while the hot cartridge is out.

For an extra 30 seconds I would isolate both.

I assume that he wants to have use of the cold tap while he waits to get the correct hot cartridge. As it is the kitchen tap it could be the only source of mains water, the other cold taps being fed from a tank.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

I'm going to play it safe.

Dave
