Morning all,

I've been fortunate enough to inherit an 80-200 2.8L.

There's a wee problem with the lens however. It will only shooot wide-open at 2.8. I assume this is to do with diaphragm blades being stuck. Setting to any other aperture gives an error on the camera. I've tried with digital and film bodies.

questions:
1) Is this common? anyone heard of it before?
2) Can anyone recommend a place to get it fixed? reckon it would be doable?

All advice gratefully received!

cheers,

It may be that the lens firmware needs updating
that sort of error usually means the lens isn't reporting "actual aperture" back to the camera
or is ignoring the "set this aperture" command

have you tried cleaning the contacts - just in case

Canon Elstree is my suggestion

Sticky aperture blades are not too uncommon in older lenses. Have a little try of this....set the aperture to its smallest setting and repeatedly toggle the DOF preview button whilst looking into the lens...can you see the blades trying to move? Sometimes this will free them up.

Lehmanns in Soke-on-Trent will probably have a go at fixing it for you if required.

Thanks for tips. I'll give them a try this evening.

Fingers crossed!

I believe the 80-200L is not in Canon's list of repairables now.

Yes sorry i should have said, i sent it to the Canon service centre and they bounced straight back. They didn't want to know =(
