Hi All,

following from your very helpful advice, I sent my EOS 300D off the Canon for a service. I got it back today and with a great big cheer, opened it up to test it out. My camera was fine the whole time! It is my lens that is the problem :(!!!
So, $150+ later, I am no closer to being able to take any pics.......:'(

Can anyone tell me if lenses can be repaired? Is it cost efficient? Or should I just throw it and get a replacement? New or secondhand?

I don't know very much about the workings of cameras, I just like to take pleasing photographs and I joined TP to learn and be challenged......I can tell you that I am finding the frustration of not being able to actually use my camera is a challenge I didn't expect!

Any advice will be most gratefully received..

What lens is it?

If it's a good one it might be worth repairing but if it's a cheapo that could be a different story.

Ouch, just the kit lens? You probably could've bought 2 second hand ones for $150 :(

There's no point trying to repair it, you can find them all over the place for really cheap. You could maybe put your one up on ebay as faulty for a bit of money, and not let it go completely to waste.

It's a Canon EFS 18-55mm

Assuming it's not the IS version as you haven't included that bit, I'd bin it but then others may be more gracious over the 18-55 non IS version. The long and short is it's not a great lens and I would have thought not economical to repair either.

It is the lens that came with the camera, which was bought for me second hand a few years ago...... so probably is time to replace it!

I have just read another thread discussing new lenses but I have about as much money as knowledge about what to replace it with, or where to look!

I'm sorry if I sound like a damsel in distress......I just want my camera to work again.

Any ideas?

Thanks;)

Hi

Isn't worth repairing it, you can pick up a nearly new one on here (IS version) for £60 ish mark.

Thanks.
I just found Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens on Amazon for under £100....(am I allowed to say that here?)

If I may suggest you take your camera to Focus on Imaging and try different lenses on your own camera. May help you decide what lens you want and at the same time it would check out your camera.

Thanks.
