Yes
Hi all..

I've been a quiet observer here for some time now, and I can honestly say that I havn't used my camera (40D) for around 6 months. It's my own fault, I have a dustmark or smudge in the camera body which I havn't got down to dealing with, but have allowed it to be the reason to not take my kit around with me.
I, and a mate of mine (who is a regualr here) have had a little go but it needs expert attention.
So I have decided to take it somewhere to be repaired. It appears Fixation may be the best option (which is annoying as I did some work at the oval two weeks ago ). I, however, live in Berkshire and so am wondering if there is anywhere in the Surrey/Berkshire area that can off this service. If necessary, I will drive into town and take it to Fixation. I don't trust sending it in (bad prior experience).

It's one of those marks that just really :bang:

It's dust on your sensor. Either search this forum and other places and learn about how to clean your own sensor, or watch the £££s go down the drain having it professionally cleaned every time one shows up.

I have been told by a colleague that LCE in Reading (near the station) do a good job on sensor cleaning.

There is a dust mapping feature on the 40D which will automatically remove the spot in the DPP software:
I took this snippet from the canon website here:
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/tech/report/200709/200709.html

"(4)Obtain and append ''Dust Delete Data'' to images/remove dust automatically in software
When the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit (in (3) above) cannot clean all the dust from the sensor, this function maps the dust particles (which are found and recorded by taking a photo of a solid white object beforehand) and adds this information to the image data. Later, the dust mapping is used by the included software (DPP Ver. 3.2) to automatically process and remove all dust marks from the image data."

If you still want it sent away to be cleaned, I recently sent a lens to Elstree Canon and the service was excellent (and they were £50 cheaper than Fixation).

I can second GRES above - he's a one-man band, but has been in the camera business since the 1960's. I had an excellent service from Graham when my old 70 - 300mm lens broke, and he even managed to repair my dad's old tripod when it fell to bits - even though the parts for it haven't been manufactured by Velbon since the 1970's! He went to the extra effort of dismantling what was left and copying it - making the parts he couldn't get hold of.

The price was perfectly reasonable too - cost about £80 for both jobs together, and turnaround time was very good.

About 4 doors nearer the station there is a little independent camera shop too - I think it's called Station Camera's. I'm sure they do a sensor cleaning service too.

plus 1 for station cameras, proper shop with very very knowledgeable people. i bought my sons camera from there.

sorry not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but you do know this mark will be at the bottom of your sensor, as the image is upside down ,then reversed by the prism hth mike.
