Renaming image files in bulk

Heres a handy tip.

* First, open the folder and select View > Thumbnails/Details/Whatever
* Click the last picture in the folder you want to rename, hold down the Shift key, and click the first picture; this will select them all.
* Right-click the first photo, and select Rename from the drop-down menu.
* Windows XP will highlight the filename for the first photo, enabling you to give it a descriptive name.
* After you type in the name, click the white space outside of the photo and watch as Windows applies the name with a sequential number to each picture in the folder.


Basically a quick and dirty way to rename all your images.

Thought I knew a lot of windows tricks but this is easier than using the command prompt

Some of my Paris pic numbering was screwed because i put an old flash card in the camera and it jumped to the numbers on the card. Now sorted - apart from the first file that went to the end as no number was appended to that one.

If you change your mind (straight after renaming) ctrl-Z will undo the renames.... one at a time though.

Great tip for a quick rename

Personally I use a fantastic free utility called CKRename.

It's a great program, with very handy parameters too. You can replace certain strings (for example, I use it on all my photo names, replacing the IMG_ with the date....)
Add stuff to the end and beginning of filenames etc, and it does it all in one fell swoop

I just tried this and it renamed all my shots 'crap001, 'crap002', 'crap003'...
