Removing Shadow?

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 but don't know how to use it to get rid of the shadow and leave a plain background. Can anyone advise me please?
I know the photo is not brilliant as it was taken on a cell phone.

Very quick and very crude.

Open,
Select the girl.
Feather by 5 pixels.
Invert the selection.
Blur, average.

yip the average command is the way to go - Just not boosting the saturation so much!

Get the expousre better and do some noise reduction - The quality of the image looks very poor
