Went out earlier with and noticed after changing lenses that there's a piece if lint or something next to one if the AF points. When I got home I took the lens off and had a look up inside the camera and could see a small fibre next to where the AF points appear to be etched into the viewfinder.

Not having any cleaning equipment at all I foolishly tried using a cotton bud to get the offender out and only succeeded in putting two extra pieces in there! Can anyone tell me how you remove them? I did try themes also a small speck on the mirror from where I tried blowing it out first, how do I clean that too?

Camera in question is a 400D.

First off, don't panic. Don't rush at it, if the dust spots drop off, they are unlikely to cause any major problem.
So don't just go jabbing around in there. You don't want to scratch or knock anything out of place.

From ebay, you could get a rocket blower. This will move the dust around, hopefully it will land somewhere where it will not bother you.

Alternatively, there is something like the arctic butterfly. This is a brush which picks up static electricity. You then hold it near the piece of dirt/dust, and it sticks to the brush. This is a more expensive option, but allows you to remove the piece from inside of the camera.

People use cotton buds for 'wet'-cleaning of sensors. Perhaps you need to blow the dust off of the cotton bud first if you do re-try?
