This may be a impossible question to answer but does any one know of any user guides or tool that allows a user to remove colour from a photo except one.
E.G a picture of a fruit bowl and you wanted to keep the green of a apple and make everything else black and white.

Are such effects even possible to achieve on the freeware gimp 2?

Search youtube for 'gimp selective colour tutorial'

duplicate the base layer
Desaturate the new top layer to give B+W
Mask or erase the required area from the desaturated layerto reveal the base layer colour.

I'm not sure if you could do it another way in Gimp, but for a simple shape this would be easy enough

Not used gimp for a long time, but i'm sure when i last used it it could do all the usual adjustments, so can't imagine this was missing. You should therefore be able to adjust the saturation of each colour channel individually, which will do what you want - you might just have to dig through the menus looking for "saturation" or "colour channels" or something similar.

Sorry I can't be more help with specifics.

Simple answer: DON'T DO IT!!! Everyone seems to hate this effect.

Not quite as simple: Make 2 layers and put a black and white version underneath the colour one. Now just delete everything from the colour one you don't want revealing the back and white underneath. This may work better for you if the object has quite a few shadows and highlights where selecting a specific shade might not select the whole object.

I'd say the majority of forum users. Usually when there's a discussion it has a marmite effect. Don't jump to conclusions. I actually like the effect when done properly.

Now let's keep this on topic and provide helpful advice.

Well I am still waiting for your tip on achieving this effect gramps. My apologies to the OP for these wasted posts.
