And replacing with a solid white one.. I know this is an easy thing for most, but I'm really struggling to get it to look decent! Using Photoshop which I'm totally uncomfortable with, I've watched a few tutorials of which this is the best I've found.

I use Lightroom for most things, but photoshop is a mystery to me. As I'm being asked to do more and more home shoots, I now need to learn how to do it. Does anyone have any reliable go to tutorials?

Thanks,

Nick

If you have the new ps 2020 ,google ps 2020 whats new, there are some very good you tube videos on the new object selection tool which should help.
Sorry I can,t post a link but I cant manage it on my tablet.
If you are doing more home shoots it might be worth investing in a portable white background

I’ve got a white backdrop that I use for pre school stuff, which is fine for 3-4 people, but I’m being asked to do lots of family stuff. Yesterday was 8 grandchildren from 2 months to 18. I just can’t fit everybody on it!
I’m using the new PS so I’ll have a look.

Get a graphic tablet and the Photoshop Pen tool and background eraser tool, and practice, its simple enough if you want a good results, hair and the like is a lot more difficult, you must shoot to as near white as you can to start with, as a side note all the automatic tools are rubbish.

The key is starting with a high contrast image, which makes selections easier. I.e. it's going to be easier to separate blond hair from a dark BG than it is from a mid-light BG. You could also use color contrast... i.e. shooting them against the blue sky will make selecting the blue easier; as long as no one is wearing a similar blue.

But for people/portraits I would just avoid doing the white BG cutout unless there is a very specific reason/need.

Dr Russel Brown used to have some good videos on advanced selections. Don't know if he's still around on the web.
