I just got a Canon 400D and im wondering if I should get a remote shutter thing, what should I look for. Are they really cheap?

Have a look in eBay, there are hundreds of them. You can buy two types, the corded version or the wireless version
Both are relatively cheap. And in my opinion are a must have addition to your kit.
 
there are so many there, I searched on here and people were saying RC-1 but it doesnt seem that is a brand name, just a type. They are all different.

So does the 400d have something on it to receive the wireless signal, or do you plug something into the camera as well.
 
I have the RC-1, it's Canon's official remote for the likes of the 400D. There are other generic remotes on ebay which are compatible with the 400D, but the RC-1 isn't expensive so I'd recommend you get that.

The 400D has an infrared sensor on the front, to the left of the lens as you look at the camera from the front. When using the remote you just hold it slightly in front of the camera (out of shot!) and press.

I've got the RC-1 wireless Canon shutter remote, it's a MUST have for ANY kit! Very inexpensive and easy to use. Just set your camera to speed-shooting mode and you just turn the remote on (has two settings, one for 1 second delay and the other for faster). Also would suggest a wired remote (plugs directly into your camera's body), as when you want to be 'behind' the camera the wired remote will allow that, as the wirless choice you have to put your hand that's holding it infront of the camera's body to receive the signal. They're like dirt cheap now, too!
 
The Genuine canon ones seem to be a bit more than the other ones there, but are the other non canon ones any good?

I'm afraid I couldn't say, I've only ever used the Canon one. Hopefully one of the other members on here can recommend one.
 
Is £20ish too much for a brand remote? Go for the Canon then you know it's going to work. ~I have both the wired and wireless and they both come in useful for different things.
 
Same here i have both, I use the wired remote as my main one, and the wireless when i do family shot ect that inc me in it.
