When I need just 10 or 12 shots for a days use or in a half-frame camera I cut down a 36exp into 3 and the 2 lengths not on the original cannister I put in re-loadable cannisters.

However the plastic ones I have shed a massive amount of v tiny plastic triangles and cover the inside of the darkbag and also get into cameras.

Can anyone recommend any good re-loadable ones? I'm also trying to save up the manufacturers metal ones but any camera with auto wind and the leader is back in the cannister and then I have to open them and there is no way they could be re-used. Does anyone have any tips for retrieving the film leader?

Well I bought a S\H Jessops from ebay for about £3 and it works quite well erm but I have to wear my hearing aid as you have to listen out for a click when the plastic tongue engages with the leader of the film (or whatever it does).

Nik and Trick sell one. That said, if you are using a manual rewind camera you can usually feel/see when the film has come off the take up reel, if you are lucky enough to have a Canon EOS then they have a custom function for leaving the leader out.

Just use a piece of old negative to retrieve the leader, there are videos on Youtube but basically you soak the old negative for a few seconds and shake off any excess, wetting it makes the emulsion sticky, push that into the can, wind the film in the can until it starts to pull in the old negative and then pull out. It can be a bit hit an miss but works most times.

Or just lick it. I was quite astounded when that worked.

Also, eBay sells bags of cans with the leader sticking out (sample auction)

I bought the retriever device thing so I can reuse mine, and that works fine too. Much better than the lick 'n' stick method.

Have you looked at bulk loading? Granted not all films co.e in bulk

Thanks H565. I've ordered some of the empty cartridges with leaders. I'm on the look out for a film retriever but lots of the "quality" ones seem sold out. Will give the stick n lick a try in the meantime.

When they arrive you might find that the leader has gone back in. First time this happened, I mailed the seller and complained, got more sent out. Second time (a different seller) told me to just wind the spool and it pops out. That worked too!

Part of the 40 that just arrived. A nice selection of DX coded and non coded ones from single use cameras. All have the film sticking out too. Thanks again H565. Just off to put the plastic reloadables in the bin!
