So, my Girlfriend wanted a proper camera, so I bought her a cheap nikon D70 body, I am a Nikon user so thought she can just borrow my lenses when she needed.

What a huge mistake.

Thinking she will get bored of it, after taking to it pretty well, I thought this phase would be over after a few months, but no.

My photography trips now involved:-

Waiting to get my lens back half the time,

Carrying her camera in my backpack, and asking to get it out every 5 minutes rather than keeping it around her neck,

Overtaking AC outlets to charge batteries.

Me sitting for hours editing tons of photo's of the same bird or flower.

Stealing my tripod.

Pinching my remote.

Travelling miles to a destination for a shoot, when we get there, it's always to wet and cold.

So this xmas I am now upgrading her body and buying her a bunch of lenses and accessories so stop her from stealing mine, makes it a costly xmas!

I created a monster which now leaves a hole in my wallet

Anyone else had a similar experience?

please note, this thread isn't a rant, just a bit of humor of the situation I landed my self in lol

Mine isn't at that level but it won't be long.

I upgraded to a 5d mark3 leaving a 40d sat around. She enjoys using it but the problem lies that with no lenses, tripod or editing software, I end up lending all of my things. And then waiting around for my things back.

It's also too wet or too cold, and the sunset is always for cuddles, when all I want to do is take photos.

She also now wants a better camera, as the 40d doesn't have good enough low light capabilities for her to take photos of wild ponies and pigs in the New Forest.

Nah, I love that my guy is into photography. He's got loads more money than me so I disappear off with his lenses for months at a time.

I gave my 550D to the missus when I got a 5D2 and 7D combo, mainly cause I didn't want to sell such a good body that had served me really well. When I sold the 5D2 and 7D to get a 5D3 I 'borrowed' the 550D back for a while till I got a better backup body at which point I gave her the 550D back.

She's since gone on to a 650D and eventually sold the 550D. I got her a couple of decent lenses, knowing I could always borrow them if needed (which I have a few times) but I find it easier to buy new gear as I say 'you can always borrow it if you need to' knowing it'll disappear into my case and that's probably the last time she'll ever see it.

Your GF's hobby, she should have her own kit (and carry it herself!) You didn't create a monster by giving her your old body but you may have done by pandering to her and carrying it for her as well as by giving her free access to all YOUR kit. Ditto by doing her editing for her - that's a part of the hobby (if the images need it) so she should be tackling that too.

I loaned Nic the 300d when I upgraded to the 20d (and eventually bought her a 20d of her own). She went on to buy herself a 7d, she uses the 24-70 all the time which we consider to be 'her' lens, I bought her the 85 1.8, which is technically her only lens now. But she uses all my gear (and I use hers too). If she shoots as my 2nd I do her processing, but otherwise she does her own, and she always carries her own gear.

I sometimes think my OH thinks the same about me. She bought me a 600D for my birthday and I'll often spend ages taking pictures instead of walking around with her. She doesn't seem to mind too much though

My partner started photography just after we met and she is as passionate about it as I am.

We have our own kit for most of the stuff we shoot like camera, lenses, tripod, filters etc but we also have a few bits and pieces we share, like additional lenses.

She carries her own kit.

I kinda did the opposite, I borrowed my step daughters Canon 1000d at a vintage fair she was doing and spent the day snapping like a crazy man, being a film user back in the day, suddenly having the 36 shot limited lifted was a revelation, I didnt want to give it back at the end of the day.

I then bought my own kit, revisited my previous love of music photography and am currently having a great time.

The only problem is whenever I take my stepdaughter to any gigs her shots are always better than mine :( pesky kids

Sounds like you're all very lucky to have a partner who is in to the hobby.
My wife just wants it to work and then gets annoyed when "the camera isn't quick enough to take a photo of a moving animal" etc.

So I reckon you should all be happy! :)

Couldn't agree more

Not in that position personally.

Although I imagine it could get tricky for the ones who tell their other half 'they've had the lens for ages' or only cost x amount :D

Does your gf know you're planning to upgrade her body at Christmas? Perhaps she's thinking of doing the same for you!

oh yes i know the feeling well ,and at times she does better than me .don't regret it one bit though as at least we have something in common to talk about :bonk::bonk::bonk:

Hey, cut a long story short she has had more important things to spend her money on recently.

This post was just a bit of a laugh making humour of every day life.

I definitely don't regret it either. She has taken some brilliant shots.

We are into different types of photography though but makes it a bite more interesting

My sister in law caught the photo bug from my brother about three years ago. From small beginnings with a Panasonic FZ18 superzoom, somehow she has found her way to pinhole cameras, lumen printing and large format wet plate collodion process photography. He does get to fix her Speed Graphic when it breaks. :)

She does some rather magical and poetic things with a camera. Next week she is taking part in her fifth exhibition of the year so far.

As an aside, I couldn't imagine going out with someone who wasn't into photography. Or if they weren't into photography, they'd at least have to be into art. Or they'd have to be VERY understanding as I spend a day or two a week in art galleries...

haha, I tough the missus how to do a few things an got her a 30d for her birthday, and damn-it she does as well as i do with half the effort lol

Yeah, OK. My wife quite likes taking photographs, but has absolutely no interest in photography. She uses an old Canon A640 and a TZ9, always on 'A' mode, and produces embarassingly good photographs!

My wife was very much into photography before we met, and I converted her from Olympus to Canon so we could share equipment. Other than separate bodies, we share everything (does that sound right?)
Been that way for 25yrs, but she never puts fuel in the Car if we go out on a shoot...

I sometimes wish the MuchBeloved took a bit more of an interest but hey, it gets me out the house at the weekends with his blessing

Di

I think to be honest if i met someone i'd hate it more if they wasn't interested, at least with someone that likes the same sort of thing you can have good trips and discussions instead of those eye glazing over moments:eek:.... or annoyance at the stopping every 2 seconds and abandoning the car!
