Good luck Kaz - look forward to seeing the shot.

Well here goes my photo 52 virginity, Week 1: Accommodation

Title:Between the Rocks in a Dark Place

For this monitor lizard, its accommodation is the rocky terrains of the desert. A ray of sunlight catches the stealthy lizard crawling between rocks looking for prey while hiding from larger predetors....

....OK this was in a zoo but it's fun to pretend!

Wow, that's awesome.... and a little bit scary too!

Great start :D

Well done Kaz on your first of the 52. Great little tale you put with it too

I like how the light mimics the shape of the head, just highlighting its accommodation.

Fab take on the theme, and in some repsect the zoo is its home too.

Good luck for the next 51 pics.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks guys!

Dawn, I didn't notice the shape of light resembling the head I just messed around with ND grad filters til it looked nice yes I used a rather complex lighting rig with 2 off camera flashes to emphasize the angular shape of the head for a striking effect.

Looks quite a menacing character doesn't he, the lizzard that is lol.

Nice moody photo, would like to see a bit more detail in the eye though. and if being really picky, possibly clone out the bit of straw? on it's mouth.

Thanks, I did actually use an adjustment brush to raise the exposure on the eye by about 3 stops but yeah could use a bit more. I thought about the straw and tried cloning it out but I'm too rubbish and it ended up messy so I left it as it was. Might have a go again another time.

Hi Kaz,this is a really strong start to your 52. The atmospheric low key suits the subject well. I like the composition with the lizard facing into the open space. You've got the DOF just about right too.

I agree that the eye needs lifting a little. Did you have a tripod or was this hand-held? A little more sharpness in the in-focus areas would help.

Great pic. Patrick

Hi Kaz Good start to your 52. Scary though would'nt want to meet on a dark night.
Albi

Great tone and nice take on the topic.

I'd like to see a tighter crop and get rid of the bit of twig in it's mouth.

Gotta love reptiles :)

Cheers.

Being a reptile keeper myself I really enjoy this picture. Shame about the piece of the straw on the face but oh well.

 Nice starting image...

The other 51 have some work to keep to the same standard....;)

Sorry for being late! I've been on a skiing trip to the French Alps last week with no internet access so excuse my lateness! It was my first time skiing and the beautiful scenery was breathtaking the first time I went up the gondola. It was like a whole new world up there that I've never experienced, hence I decided to use this photo for the theme for week 2, "New".

Photo taken with Panasonic FT2 tough compact camera. I wish I'd taken my 40D with Sigma 10-20mm though :( PP'd a little in LR3.

No feedback on week 2? :(

Anyways, here's my take on week 3's theme, style.

Week 3 - Style by Kaz Shiomitsu, on Flickr

Style isn't always what you can look at, but smell and sense, your presence. My current favourite fragrance "Extreme" for men by Paul Smith.

C&C most welcomed :)

love the DOF & colours on week 3 - they really 'ping' and bring an almost 3D element to your pic :)
nice composition too :)

I like week 2 as well, but I think it might have been a little more captivating if there were 'lead in' lines or a point of focus - but the colours are really beautiful and it looks very crisp and cold :)

Wow - colours in week three are amazingly intense - think I'll have to go for a lie down

really like it

Simon.

I'm liking all your shots

The snowscape is beautiful , with the colors all seeming to reflect themselves ( I know what I mean just can't get it across:bonk:)
The colors in the last one also jump out but are beautifully sharp

Great start ,look forward to seeing your next ones :):

Hi Kaz, I really like both week 2 and 3. Great pics

week 2: I love this pic. What an amazing sky. Well exposed. Could be a bit sharper (did you have a tripod?). Also I'd be tempted to crop a bit off the bottom as there's too much featureless blank white for me.

week 3: another great shot. Colours really zing and are beautifully sharp. I like the use of limited DOF. I think I would like to see a bit more of the box at the top. What lens did you use for that?

Hi Kaz,

fantastic colours on #3! another angle (eliminating the couch) might have improved it slightly but no taking away from it being a great pic!

lovely shot for #2! but if i'd have gone up there without my dslr and wideangle, gutted would be an understatement!

Colour in week 3 are spot on and as mentioned almost looks 3D, like the dof as well, showing just enough without losing the rest of the case. Well done

Thanks! I'm really glad you like the composition, took quite a few different takes and I wanted to get a good balance between the colours and the black. DOF as well I thought this aperture gave the best clarity vs bokeh combination.

I agree about the lack of foreground interest and the lead in. I tried to do this by preserving highlight details in the snow but something with a bit more impact wouldn't have gone amiss.

really like it

 cheers that knockout colours was the effect I was going for :D Whacked up the saturation and contrast for a dramatic effect.

Thanks for kind comment. I think I know what you mean, the colours in the sky are reflected on the snow and I tried to give the photo a cold feel.

Hi Patrick, no unfortunately I didn't have a tripod with me, you're right it could be a lot sharper. Limitation of a handheld shot on a compact I guess. It was a very quick snap whilst skiing. I like the sky too loads of random stuff going on, though I don't like how the top right corner turned out. Interesting point about cropping I may have more play with it.

I used Canon 50mm II f/1.8 nifty fifty for week 3. Shot at f/2.2. Love this lens even though it's a cheapo!

Hi Paul, it's actually a jacket, in keeping with the style theme :)

Tell me about it. I didn't take my DSLR on the trip for the fear of breaking it (it was my first time skiing). Next time definitely!

Colour in week 3 are spot on and as mentioned almost looks 3D, like the dof as well, showing just enough without losing the rest of the case. Well done

Many thanks :)

Week 2 - lovely shot! It looks like a stunning place. This is the sort of thing I really need to get a wide angle lens for.

Week 3 - Amazing! It really jumped off the screen, the colours are so vivid. Fab work.

Thanks, yes the scenery was just beautiful. The lens is actually only 28mm equivalent. Cropping into panorama gives it a epic wide angle feel :)

Week 2 is a stunning image but it seems a bit too blue?

Week 3 those colours are stunning.. and very sharp..

Thanks, I like seeing lots of colours in my photos so I often intentionally use non-correct WB, in this case lowering the temperature to the blue side. It's personal preference and probably not everyone's cup of tea. Another example here where I added a lot of pink tint.

50mm is a very sharp lens :) Right up there with my 70-200L f/4. I used a tripod and focused manually in Live View then used timer shutter release to get it as sharp as possible. I should get a remote release at some point though to stop having to faff around as much.

Week 3 - Vibrant colours! Love it

Many thanks!

Week 2 -Wonderful view, great shot.
Week 3 - Stunningly vibrant colours - love it!

Love all three shots. But #3 stands out for me so vivid, nice composition and I like the DOF

Sorry late again... But I have an excuse, kinda. Other than being super busy with uni work, I've been waiting for the arrival of something I wanted for a long time and it came today, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC :D I wanted to use this lens for week 4.

Eyes and lens aperture "Wide Open" :P This is my first ever photo taken with my new Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX. Technique could be better but eh, I just thought it'd be nice to remember my first shot with this lens. The subject is my best friend at uni James who lives opposite my room.

Me: "Hey James look at my new lens! "
James: "oh letssee"
*snap*

Week 4 - Open by Kaz Shiomitsu, on Flickr

Please C&C. I've not tried portrait photography before so any tips on shooting and PP are particularly appreciated.

Ha, I do like the shot and I can empathise. My new Tokina 11-16mm arrived last week and I was dying to use it for week four. Alas, it didn't happen so nice work!
Cheers

Here's week 5. Sorry for lack of comments on everyone's photos. There's just not enough time in a day!

Week 5: Hard

All the ideas I initially had looked like they were done already so decided to do a self portrait... I'm studying engineering and the work is rock HARD (imo). Vector calculus, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, kinematics, structural analysis, material science, control theory, signal analysis etc etc AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!:bang: :gag:

Week 5 - Hard by Kaz Shiomitsu, on Flickr

Not too happy with how it turned out so might do a reshoot. Any tips?

Hiya Kaz,

Wow! Wow! Wow! I love your photo for week 5, brilliant  And what a clever clogs you are for doing such a hard study, omg I wouldn't even know what some of those subjects mean, so good luck with your studies too.

The photo definitely shouts HARD to me .... what with all those calculations and graphs and excellent job on the self portrait too, it looks like you are deep in concentration, like the way you have the hand on your head, an agonising thinking pose and the pen in hand shows your are hard at work.

It looks like you gave a lot of creative thought to this image.

BTW just noticed I haven't commented on your Week 2, 3 and 4, my apologies, I think they must have got lost in my trying to keep up with my own 52 and 365 and responding to others here.

So here is:

Week 2: Wow again, lucky you for being able to visit such a gorgeous place. It looks very cold. Did you do much processing on this image? It seems to have quite a blue hue to it, that is not a negative, as I really like it .... adds to the coolness of the image. I would have probs cloned out the bit in the middle (looks like a pole or something) and the square thingy on the mid far right. Otherwise great.

Week 3: Another great pic, love the colours and DOF. Only crit is I would have perhaps made the base on the left totally black too.

Week 4: Not a bad shot, although I can't offer much in the way of advice about portraits as it is a subject I still have a lot to learn about. But for me, looking at the image, the brow and nose seem a little over-exposed. Like the idea of the composition of just half a face.

Well done, you are doing a great job with your Photo52 and I look forward to seeing your future weeks to come.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thank Dawn, I'm glad I got the imagery of hard working across. Maybe if I spent more time working than taking photos and going out it'd be less hard but what the hell, you gotta have fun eh? :D I enjoyed doing the self portrait, just wished the model was better looking :'(

The graph is of specific enthalpy plotted against specific entropy for steam, tells you what phase water is in and how much energy it has at different conditions, important data for power generation etc. Energy a field I'm very interested in.:)

Don't worry, you're one of the most prominent posters in the challenge and I'd say you're doing a hell of a job keeping up with most people and your own. I appreciate your comments very much.

Not too much processing, tiny curves adjustment and yes I cooled down the WB to give it a blueish cold look. I agree the two features you mentioned are a little distracting.

Week 3: Another great pic, love the colours and DOF. Only crit is I would have perhaps made the base on the left totally black too.

Fair point, I think it was pointed out before too. Maybe I'll get myself a sheet of black paper/cloth for this sort of thing. Reflective surface might work also.

Week 4: Not a bad shot, although I can't offer much in the way of advice about portraits as it is a subject I still have a lot to learn about. But for me, looking at the image, the brow and nose seem a little over-exposed. Like the idea of the composition of just half a face.

Thanks, it was actually a full face shot, but I wanted to draw the attention to the eyes and after a trying a few different cropping I ended up with the half face crop with the eye right in the middle. I don't think I blew the highlights but I did up the contrast a lot and as you point out the nose in particular seems a overexposed. Thanks for your opinion.

Well done, you are doing a great job with your Photo52 and I look forward to seeing your future weeks to come.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Cheers Dawn, and you tooo :)

Now that is just too hard for me :) picture tells a great story and so well handled too, everything works a treat, busy but not too busy and the use of B&W couldn't be bettered for me, very impressed :)

I really like your shots for weeks 4 and 5 - your portrait shot is great I particularly like the b&w and the close up.
Again the b&w works really well for week 5 and you are spot on for the theme:clap:

Many thanks Gary and Joan glad you like them. Week 5 seems very well received :) I guess I just don't like seeing myself in photos! I'm stuck for week 6 though had a few ideas but nothing that's clicked yet. Still got the weekend to come up with something.
