I have just been reading a post about tripods and Redsnapper was mentioned so I decided to take a look (I don't need a new tripod, I was just being nosey).

Anyway, I was looking at the heads and found this and looked at the tripods and found this which when put together make up the two components of the Jessops Major tripod but costs £215.95 from Redsnapper whereas I paid £89.99 for my Jessops Major which is a massive difference.

Not really sure what my point is apart from being relieved that I didn't pay £215 for something I got for £90.

Only you are not comparing like for like.

The Redsnapper legs are 4 section rather than 3, with a max diameter of 32mm rather than 22mm, max load 10kg rather than 5kg.
The max height of the jessops tripod is 153 cm, the Redsnapper is 153 with the column down, 179 column extended.

Fairly clear why one costs more than the other.

The Jessops one is about as tall as I am when it's fully up and I'm 6ft which would make it the same size. As for the rest, I am not sure about that but hey ho my bad!

It was not meant as a criticism - if the Jessops tripod does everything you need, and costs half the price then it's an obvious choice to get that one - but the redsnapper legs are (according to the on-line specs) a lot 'chunkier', so should be more rigid, able to handle a heavier load, etc.

Unfortunately tripods suffer from conflicting design requirements - you want them as light as possible so you'll carry them with you, and as heavy as possible so they'll be as stable as possible.
At the same time they also need to collapse as small as possible, and be as high as possible...

And, of course, we want them as cheap as possible. :shrug:

I'm looking to get the jessops major next month having had a decent demo in store and the price looks okay
wouldn't think it was as good as something twice the price but it does beg the question.
is it an original manufacture? or a re-badged OEM from another reputable source?

I love mine but my only real quibble with it is the head. I find the head a tad heavy so am looking for something lighter if possible.

It's very sturdy, comes with quite a nice case, and is extremely flexible in usage.

I have a lightweight cheapo plastic tripod
will mostly likely keep that for general use where weight is the key
but if I need something sturdy, I think that Major is the way forward for my needs
also I have a ball head 5/8" screw fit that should work on it too if needed

I had an eBay special before I got this and used it until the head fell off! Lol

Luckily the camera was in my hand at the time.
 
Has anyone actually tried the rednsapper tripods?
They are doing the RS-283 tripod and RSH-24 3-way head for £58.95 plus del.-http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RS-283_tripod_and_RSH-24_3-way_head_.html#nogo

I'm looking at getting this one, the price isn't bad and within budget but haven't seen them around.
It comes with a carry bag aswell!

Anyone got any experiences with these?

Yes amost,
I`ve got the 284 ( 4 section ) with the 3 way head and it`s fine. Mine came with a nice bag included, large enough to hold the tripod and head combined although it`s best to remove the clamp/adjuster first.
I like the rotary, rubberised leg clamps although they are a bit slower to operate than the lever type, and the foam covering on all the legs is nice and comfy on the hands in the winter when it`s cold out
It`s really sturdy although a bit weighty, tripod, head and bag combine = about 6lbs.
My mate who has a Manfrotto that cost 1/2 as much again was pretty impressed with it, and some day I may invest in a ball head which seem a bit quicker and easier to adjust. In fact the only issue I`ve had is with the head which required required me to do a bit of a an adjustment to make it stable, but it`s fine now and I find the quick release mechanism works really well.

That looks like a pretty good deal to me, have been searching around for a decent budget tripod and I might snap that one up.

Hopefully the offer lasts for a little while longer...

In the end I went for the 283 and ball head, TP members get 10% discount, inc postage I paid around £106. Very pleased

Really like mine. Especially after swapping the head to a Manfrotto 496RC2 ball head, much better. Cheap flexible and light combo.:clap:

i have just purchased the RS-324 & RSH-12 combo hopefully recieving this tomorrow went for this due to value for money and better spec against the manfrotto
 
Nothing wrong with RedSnapper. Had mine for ages, quick release plate is great. Proper study big thing.
