RedSnapper - a realistic opinion

I've watched with interest the comments in this forum on the RedSnapper products and the service offered by the UK agency. After weighing up the pros and cons of this I have decided to post now with a more realistic and hopefully objective and helpful assessment; here it is: WOW!

If I limit myself to just 2 words, my report would be 'totally delighted'.

Here's the longer version:
1. Service:
I ordered a tripod and 3 way head at about 3:45 pm yesterday, 17th December. They were delivered today, 18th; the 3 head at about 10 am and the tripod at about 8 pm. You just can't expect better service than that, at this time of year, can you?

2. Product Design
For about 1 year I had been looking at the established manufacturers like Manfrotto, Giottos, Gitzo, Velbon, Slick. When I factored in the functions I wanted - especially the ability to get very low for macro photography, along with good stability - then each of these manufacturers had products which were good to excellent. I would be delighted to own any of them, but my bank manager would be less than amused. I found it difficult to justify the cost - generally in the range of £100 to £250, even after discount and without a head.

I have paid about £63 for this tripod AND the three way head, excluding P&P. It is extremely good value for money.

The RedSnappper tripod offers all the features that I need with easily adjustable but solid settings for leg angle and leg length. The tripod will also go as tall as, if not taller, than most of the competition. With the short tube in place, the fitting screw, to which a camera is attached, will go as low as about 5 cms from the ground - too low in fact to accommodate my camera! I probably should have bought the Ball Head instead, but I'll try to save up for that now.

The leg locking mechanism is really robust as well as having a nice feel.

The tripod is certainly stable, given the larger diameter of the leg tubes.

The option of being able to stand on either rubber feet or steel spikes is attractive and quick to exploit.

Overall, the design of the tripod is robust and gives the impression of being long lasting. It appears that the design reflects much influence by engineers who are tripod users than by marketeers who are lurkers and posers. It reminds me of the W.124 E-class Mercedes Benz in this regard (aside from the price)

3. Effect on the customer
Perhaps if I tell you that my evening meal is still sitting half eaten and cold in the dining room because I was getting so much pleasure from exploring the capabilities of this tripod and then writing this post will give you some idea.

The bottom line is that there is little point of doing product comparisons among the Brand name market leaders, even though their products are excellent. Just go and buy the Red Snapper tripod; save yourself a lot of time and money.

Excellent review. It's giving me second thoughts (have been considering Manfrotto).

I've said before on here - I've got a Redsnapper tripod and I think its great. Well made, solid and, it just works. If I needed more from a tripod, then I'd be in the £200-£300 range.

I've also got a Redsnapper bag and that too is excellent. I know a bag is not a tripod, but it was the quality of the bag that persuaded me that the tripod was likely to be good vfm. And I was right.

My wife placed an order for the Redsnapper Christmas Special earlier today...can't wait!

What does it say about your evening meal? Welcome to TP :)

I have to add my vote to this. I have a redsnapper tripod and bag and more than happy with both. Great kit for a decent price.

Joe is also first class to deal with.

Welcome to TP, XEyedBear. If there's some sort of award for the most helpful first post, then you must be in with a shout for it. Nice one.

Great review, I'm really looking forward to getting mine from under the tree. From the weight of the box, it's certainly heavy duty.

I bought a Manfrotto tripod and head (before I'd heard of Redsnapper) and am delighted with it, I know it will last years. Having said that though, I'm after a monopod now and will seriously consider Redsnapper having read the many positive reviews on these forums.

Nice first post, until we find out you're working for Joe :D

i got the CF Tripod and pistol head a few weeks back, service was fantastic and tripod is equally as good. if i wanted to get something better it would cost a fortune

I'm far too old to be employable; I've been retarded (I think that's what they said; or is that retired?) since 1994.

I've had a rethink this morning, having played with it again (remember, at my age I'm talking about the tripod): I think I've undersold it. This piece of kit is going to last just like the MB I mentioned.

I have a Nikon D80 which, with the 18-200 VR lens attached weighs quite a lot (especially after 8 hours walking around Rome with it in the hand - Rome being quite a liberal city after all). But this tripod has absolutely no problem with this weight at all.

I'm looking forward to putting it to some serious use in the next 2 weeks.

What it says is that I need the designers of the Red Snapper tripod to come and do some cooking for me! And, conversely, they defintely do NOT need me to come and do some designing for them.

I totally agree with this review. This tripod seems to have everything that an aluminum tripod should have. Gven that you get the retractable spiked feet, smaller central column and good quality bag included it is a cracking deal.

I am not slagging of Manfrotto but to get a tripod with similar spec you would spend about £150. Its a no brainer really.

Save the money and dont be a brand whore. The Redsnapper kit is realy first rate and I am eyeing up the bags as well.

I've had a redsnapper tripod and ballhead for a few months now.
I can only echo whats been said above.
The build quality is excellent. Mine has been in rivers, in sea water etc
It is very robust and great value for money.
If you need a new tripod, buy one of these

Well, not only a great review but a some witty follow ups as well. Welcome aboard me hearty, I think you'll fit in well around here.
Also, I've been considering a new tripod for a while now (mines a cheapo job) and I think your review has made up my mind. Redsnapper it is and damn the torpedos.

Cheers

Andy

Mines under the tree!!!!!!!!!, delivered the day after ordering, my mates where well impressed

I have to say another thumbs up for Redsnapper! I just got hold of one of their ball heads. Motion is fluid and locks well even with my D300 and a 70 - 300VR!

Great Job! :)

Can i ask, was this the TB-12?

I ordered my tripod (no head) yesterday 23/12/2008 @ 3.30pm and it arrived this morning 24/12/2008 @ 10.30am!

I'm very, very pleased with it.

I bought a Benro OEM/rip off ball head from Ebay for £30 (plus P&P) so with the 10% discount for mentioning 'Talk Photography' for the tripod, I've got a fantastic set up for £75 (plus P&P)

This is the ball head which was an absolute bargain. It is also graduated at the bottom, just doesn't show it in my photo.

I've also purchased the tripod and 3 way head from Redsnapper. Glad I listened to all on this forum. It's a fantastic bit of kit and well worth the money. You get express delivery too which takes some beating.

Got to agree totally with the OP.

A question for those of you that have the same. Do you store the 3 way head in the tripod bag or seperately? I just can't figure out how to store the tripod in the bag with the head attached!?!

Same here, dont want to really be having to take the handle off everytime it goes in the bag, to be honest I will probably ditch the head as I dont really classify the quick release plate as quick at all, not in the sense of the Manfrotto ones, its just a dovetail that you tighten up........not a criticism just an obversation but I will stick with the manfrotto quick release heads.

Santa brought me some Redsnapper legs - yay! They really are as good as everyone says, I actually prefer it to the Manfrotto 55 series tripod I was using a few weeks back.

Worked it out - take off the handles and store them in the internal zipped pocket. :)

Yer was it me or was there no instructions?

Got mine for xmas, ballhead + tripod and really happy. Set up my 100-400L on it with no probs.

Well I guess it was VMLopes and yourself. Either way - help from all. That's what I love about this forum

Eh?

You can get away with just taking one handle off and putting it in the bag.
