Redirecting the light from flash

Hi, I'm yet to procure an off camera flash, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks to bending the light from my flash, if this is possible?
Basically I want to try some smoke art photography, and take a few more water drop shots, but I know I need the subject to be illuminated from the side for best results. I only have the flash on the top of my camera for now.
Am I best holding out 'til I get an off camera flash?

Any ideas?

Yes. Just get a basic Yongnuo gun and a cheap radio trigger set to get you going. £70?
